When the drone returns home:

if the return home altitude is 100' does the drone drop to 100 feet then return home, or does it move over the home position and then drop? I would believe it is the former.

Second, is the home position initially where the drone takes off or is it where the calibration is done? So, if I turn on the drone, calibrate and walk 50' from that position, where is "home"?
 
The drone will never drop to a RTH height and then fly back. If it's higher it will stay at that height and fly back. So if the RTH is set at 100, the drone is at 200 and RTH is triggered, it will fly back at 200.

RTH is where the drone takes off and hovers for a couple of seconds. RTH is not established until the drone lifts off the ground.
