New to this so all help appreciated. When flying and you lose rc signal and says aircraft disconnected and no video. What happens? Does drone return home automatically?

Using the default settings in DJI GO and assuming the drone has a good GPS connection, it'll auto return back to the home point three seconds after the remote controller signal is lost.

It's also possible to make the drone land or hover in place by changing this setting:

The aircraft will only automatically RTH if you have your settings correct and ONLY when you lose RC connection ( Uplink ), loosing video feed only will not initiate RTH.

I initiated rth when everything disconnected. It immediately said command timed out.
This most likely means that you lost uplink. When that happens the RC, RTH button is useless because you have no connection to the aircraft. The RTH, was auto initiated by the aircraft, not by you.

What you experienced sometimes happens. Don't panic and stay calm (easier said than done). As @msinger and @Fly Dawg said, make sure the RTH settings are turned on and set correctly (not to hover or land) and the Phantom will handle the return if you lose control signal.

That's happened to me many times as my P3S tends to get well beyond the advertised range, so I let it do what it's programmed to do. So far, with God's blessings, that Phantom has always returned home, with or without my intervention.
