As there is a lot of misinformation circulating, let's clarify a few important points:
- You don't have to deal with fisheye if you use a GoPro.
- You don't have to change the lens to get rid of fisheye.
- The GoPro shoots far better quality video than the Inspire or P3.
- More pixels does not guarantee a better image.
- 4K is way overrated.
Yes .. lets clarify
For the Gopro appreciation society, nothing could ever be better than their little Gopros and none of the handicaps of that camera are a problem. They use them and like them. It works for them and that's OK.
But the Gopro is far from the final evolution of the aerial camera. The Gopro was an early stage in the development of drone photography and now its time has passed. DJI has continued the evolution and the P3 looks to be a great step in this development.
You don't have to deal with fisheye if you use a GoPro.
Sorry Ian .. you do. Gopro only sell cameras with a fisheye lens. One way or another you have to deal with fisheye. Whether you convert with software or you pay additional $$ to replace your lens.
You don't have to change the lens to get rid of fisheye.
Yes, we all know that you can use software because we have all had to do it up to now. This takes time (with a resulting loss of original image size and quality). The P3 promises the user the ability to use the whole original image without having to do any conversion - just like land-based photographers have always done.
And before you tell us that you shoot in Medium FOV to reduce fisheye ... that doesn't reduce fisheye. It simply reduces the size of your image by cropping the edges. It does nothing to straighten curved lines or remove distortion.
The GoPro shoots far better quality video than the Inspire or P3
I must have heard that a thousand times - but never with any proof. It's the Gopro fans mantra chanted loudly in forums.
It's been an important item of faith for users of a camera that (until the 3DR Solo) couldn't be properly controlled in flight.
But if you are going to shoot video in Medium, you are fooling yourself because you throw away 50% of your original image and still have fisheye.
Gopro 4K Ultrawide = 3840 x 2160 = 8.3 Megapixels
2.7K Medium = 2704 x 1520 = 4.1 Megapixels (50% thrown away)
More pixels does not guarantee a better image.
Absolutely right, number of pixels is only one of the factors and when used alone it is not a measure of image quality.
Not really a factor in a comparison of Gopro and P3 cameras because they create original images of the same size
However, if you are going to handicap yourself by shooting Medium FOV, you've thrown away 50% of your image and that is not going to help you get a better image.
4K is way overrated
Correct again. I completely agree. For most users 4K will be more trouble than it's worth and do nothing to make their video better.
