DJI Warranty Warning. This is message I just received from DJI Service.

So if I understand your strategy, you crash your drone and send them a flight record from a previous successful flight thinking DJI will never find the .dat file on the AC?

I'm also curious how attempting to pass responsibility for your own actions onto someone else is a good thing.

@CharlieU .....In response to @LarBear360 Is this the location you were flying???View attachment 96492

Dude, what kind of remark is that suggesting I'm trying to pull some kind of scam? I don't think you understand anything that has been said here. I think the rules here are if you aren't being helpful don't post. Probably best to keep your sarcasm to yourself.

I sync'd the records and sent them additional info they asked for. I've never sync'd the flight logs before and didn't know how. Pretty nice to be able to play back the animation with data. DJI covered my Phantom 4 under warranty in March 2017. They didn't ask for anything but I did send the link to Airdata and pictures of the crash site.

Right or Wrong, they go by the data collected in the .dat file from the AC.
Anything that is even remotely obvious will nullify what you may consider a "Legitimate" claim for warranty.

I'm finding that out. I returned to the crash site which is only a block from my house. I looked at the total area above, below and around trying to determine why DJI said pilot error. I then looked over the flight data again. The possibility I see is the quad was under the tree with the yellow flowers in the picture below, . I could see on the video feed rising terrain. At 5.5 mph I most likely thought I could climb to avoid terrain and flew up into the small bottom branches of the tree. The quad then fell 11 or 12 feet to the ground upside down. I say upside-down because all the carbon reinforced props were broken, prop caps were off, the gimbal-camera was detached and the battery ejected. The broken plaster mark on the wall was probably old age and lack of attention.
I appreciate all of the input here. Very helpful in clearing my head and not laying awake at night thinking about this. I am going to accept my $99 Phantom 4 Pro. I still have my two P4's and a P3S. I know about data sync now. Thanks again.

Situational awareness is everything in flying these things. That's why I never let my P3S out of sight. Fortunately, you didn't damage anything other than your AC.

I went with DJI Care when I purchased my P3S simply because it does cover pilot error. Haven't needed it. Yet. Hope I don't.

Think of the poor guys who passed on that option and then crashed!

My friend had the exact same repose so we learned to sync our flight after every successful sessions. Same goes for the data from the DJI Go App. We save them. If we ever have a crash, we don’t sync and send them the last successful flight data. Little effort goes a long way.

I get it. You will try to defraud them via US Mail. Smart.

I noticed that you are prevented from entering TapFly mode when you try to establish a target outside of the conical zone of the obstacle avoidance sensors. When in manual mode you need to be aware of this limitation of the sensors. It is documented in the manual.

CharlieU,

I'm curious if you were getting any Warnings from your obstical avoidance system before the crash? You mentioned shadows in the picture. Where was the aircraft in relation to the shadows?

I had a crash indoors because my sensors were moving the aircraft away from a bright light source (LED TV) into a darker area of the lighted room where the sensors were not picking up the objects. The aircraft sensors on the front side facing the TV was pushing the aircraft backwards 6 feet while not sufficent enough light to detect rear sensor objects reliably. LESSON LEARNED: My $17 investment in prop guards would have prevented my incident had I been using them at the time.

I don’t even get how this would even work if he was making a claim for a destroyed or lost aircraft. DJI would see a flight that ended in a successful landing - most probably back at the same home point.

Wow, what an impact crater. Either that's really crappy wall (yo, T man, here's a design for ya) or your phantom was doing about 50 mph... or you got after the wall with a chipping hammer. That outline is suspect to me, just a little too perfect.

In CharlieU's defense (and I don't know if this will help his defense). I've noticed within the last few firmware updates the obstacle avoidance system seems less sensitive. At first few flights I could not fly the bird anywhere near my physical self, above or on the sides. Lately, I was able to fly close enough where I was concerned about impact. I didn't receive a warning until the bird was just a foot away. I may need to factory reset or re-calculate the aircraft, not certain, but I've needed to be more diligent on the aircraft's surroundings than previous flights.

NON-WARRANTY PER DATA ANALYSIS. User stick command error FLY257 1. Unit was in P-GPS mode and was responsive to RC input; 2. At t=315s, relative height=14.3m, unit recorded external impact, then fell. 3. User commanded pitch forward and throttle up before impact. Unit was ascending while pitching forward putting obstruction outside of detection zone. 4. GPS overlay shows user crashed into a tree. Incident date: 3/10/18 Incident GPS location: 33.8037000 -112.1142459 Conclusion: User stick command error. Impact in air. [Non warranty Repair] Dear Customer, Unfortunately, damage that is not caused by a product malfunction or is out of the warranty period is not covered by DJI aftersales policy. We will either repair it or replace it with a product that's new or equivalent to new in both performance and reliability after payment has been received.

WARNING: Do not try to ascent or turn while approaching an object to avoid that object. "Unit was ascending while pitching forward putting obstruction outside of detection zone." My P4P was traveling at 4.5 mph when it struck a block wall. Guess I should have just flown straight into the wall. I paid the $99 with DJI Care for a replacement rather than turn it in to State Farm with no deductible. It would have cost $345 to repair and I think plus shipping. With the cost of DJI Care the total comes to $248. The warranty along with DJI Care ran out two days after I filed the claim. My State Farm policy was effective 45 days ago which hopefully I won't be needing.
Next time buy your drone from Best Buy and get their warranty. They will cover for two years and any crash, other than an intentional crash, is covered.

I hesitated at first with my p4p obsidian purchase, and after much thinking a week later bought the best buy warranty

His claim was not an aftersales warranty claim. If it were, it would not be valid as this was clearly pilot error. That's what DJI Care is for. And tha's exactly why it only cost $99.

By the way, if you enter those coordinates into Google Earth there are no walls there, only trees.

If you zoom in, you will see the wall that runs along the property line. :)

Somethings to be aware of:
1. Aircraft pitch affects the view of the obstacle avoidance system. Know the cones, distances and functions of all 5 sensors on a P4P, or the ones on your bird
2. P/A/S can exponentially change function of collision avoidance.
3. Flight at high speeds in S mode will cause a P4P to decend in straight and “level” flight, because of the negative pitch resulting from aggressive throttle stick inputs. If flying towards your self on a hill, you might not notice it until it hits the tree next to you where you took off and ascended to 50’ above the tree in elevation and then flew 1250’ straight away turned and made a Speed run back. I checked the GPS altitude at launch, turn and a couple of times on the way back. The last check was when I noticed it was now way low about 25’ out and released all controls. Brakes don’t work “that” good. Oops
4. Even P Mode collision avoidance is effected by pitch.
5. VLOS is the law, AND a good idea!
6. As good as the P4P is it needs help from common sense, experience from flight time and application of safety principles,

No warnings I was flying about 5 miles per hour looking for a small drone that got caught in the wind. I would have been with in obstacle avoidance distance from the wall if I continued straight ahead about 3 ft farther without any control input. I thought I could climb up over the wall. Unfortunately I was under a tree at the time. 3 ft farther I would have been past the tree and been able to climb okay. The replacement Phantom 4 Pro is supposed to arrive on Monday. According to the serial number it's new and not refurbished. There is no R in the serial number.
