It looks like you're using an Android device, so this will be a super easy fix for you. Uninstall DJI GO and install the previous version. You can download old DJI GO APK files here.

Yes I have been down that road before and & will do it again - was just remarking because I tried it out to see today, and it took my best range of around 850 metres down to a maximum of 140 metres simply by it upgrading my basic fly safe database to version: 01.00.01.07

I'm not sure why the app would do this when range is controlled by the RC signal from the Phantom and the controller.

No idea - but there was an acknowledgement once it was installed it said basically "we will control the drone for safety reasons" and something about its limited range etc
