Incorrect altitude

One thing I'm not clear on. According to DJI, here ...
http://wiki.dji.com/en/index.php/Phanto ... Home_Point
"The current position of the quad-rotor will be saved as home point when you push the throttle for the first time"
This is for the original Phantom. Is this true for the Phantom 2?
I always thought the home position was set as soon as the GPS got a lock.

Directions for resetting home point are here...

Yea. Some often conflicting and ambiguous manual translations out there but everything I have read indicates Home Position is not set until some point during or after lift-off.

If the home point is set after throttle up, the the altitude will be re-zeroed at that point and it doesn't matter how far off the altitude reading is when it's sitting on the ground.
It would make sense for DJI to program it that way since you might power up in a different location than you take off from.

To be honest I've never really paid that much attention to the altitude reading before takeoff. I'll have to take notes this weekend.

I tried a quick test when I got home today.
Powered up the Phantom and let it sit for ~10 minutes.
The altitude started at ~0.5m and after the 10 minutes it had climbed to ~3m
It was outside in the shade with an ambient temperature of ~78F

Then I took off and hovered at ~3m. The altitude did not reset to zero at takeoff.
The altitude reading was ~6m. I moved to >10m away and tried to reset home. I had some difficulty with that.
When I finally was able to reset home, my distance change to zero but my altitude stayed at ~6m. I couldn't get the altitude to reset to zero.

I've read many posts from users who say that they reset home in air and that altitude is added to the RTH height.
From this I could assume that setting or resetting home doesn't reset the altitude reading to zero, but does memorize the home altitude that RTH counts up from.
But you know what happens when you assume. Can anyone confirm? Anyone who is used to resetting home in the air?

So those of you who have huge negative altitudes after startup must have a malfunction. Unless I'm mistaken, the altitude should climb as the system warms up, not drop.
And for reference, mine started close to zero and only climbed to ~3m after warming up.

Update: Simon wouldn't steer me wrong. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJourEiJ77E
So if your altitude is way off, reset your home location and the RTH height will start from there.

I decided that -267 feet was just too much to deal with so I returned my v3 for a refund. My v2 does set a reasonable altitude and so flying it makes me much more comfortable. I believe the problem with the v3 is internal to the NAZA and cannot be fixed without factory help.

Think I'll wait and see if a P3 or Inspire 2 comes out and for now just fly my camera-less v2

Has there been any fix to this wrong altitude issue in the p3 app? I'm having altitude readings of 40', 100'...when I land.

It depends on how high I fly.

I've recalibrated everything.

Using 1v.1.9 firmware as I've been told not to update to the newest version yet..
