Is the p4p too much machine for a beginner? Buy the 4, or start out with a cheaper model?

Great machine.....but so easy to fly, that you can get over confident. Practise in an open area well away from trees and buildings to begin with...get used to the orientation when the quad is flying towards you, which takes a bit of getting used to.
Most importantly, download the full manual from the DJI website and read carefully...particularly things like the Return to Home settings.

The back-facing sensors make it safer and easier to fly than both the p4 and Mavic and certainly the earlier models. Starting with the manual and video-tutorials is a good start.
IMO you should consider buying a P3A for half the price, it's just as easy to fly. It records great 1080P and 2.7K video, 12MP photos, and flies 33mph quite nicely. After a year of flight with no crashes you'll be ready for the P5 next year. But if you do crash badly, the lesson will be less expensive. The craft costs less and they are less expensive to repair. The P3A has less flaws too, such as the p4p RTH constant ascending during the trip back, false wind warnings, and you won't be bothered with out of focus shots of the P4P, because you forgot to check the focus for each shot. There's a lot to learn, and the P3A is a very capable trainer.
If you're passionate about having 4K video support, then buy the P3P for $100 more. But beware, 4k video takes a high performance PC to edit the video.
