I got my replacement phantom and it is a dud.
after I power it up I get a red box message that says the altitude is set for 30m and distance is set for 50m
how do I go about eliminating this so I can go fly it?
it is not in beginner mode.

I get the same message (with my new replacement) and just close the box and fly as per normal without any such restrictions whatsoever. I think they would like me to upgrade to the latest firmware/software (with the flight restrictions) but so far there is absolutely no need.
In short, try just closing the box and flying - should be fine.

Somewhere I read , either in this forum, or over at DJIs this issue is related to logging in to DJI...if you don't log in then you get that message? Something to that effect. And by logging in they meant with the DJI Go app. Personally I remember logging in and I have still seen this message, but I can't be certain about under what conditions. I'm literally new to this platform and at the very beginning. .like a week ago...lol...I did log in, but I also put it in beginner mode, another reason that I have read you could get that limitation. The problem 4 me is, I have never been prompted to log into DJI since that initial flight, and worse, when I was stumbling through the DJI GO menus looking for active track I saw I was no longer in beginner mode...I never changed that to my recollection..so I rationalized that was why I could fly to 400' I spite of what that controller message said.
This topic interests me quite a bit as I'm trying to feel my way through the p4p characteristics, but I feel like I'm trying to hit a moving target...having had very inconsistent user experience in just 7 flights. Don't get me wrong, she is so stable in flight, but I swear the controller has changed my initial set up from my first flight.

Ah ha...this is where I read it. So...I've never logged out from DJI. .never knew how...how did my initial settings chsnge? I purposefully put myself in beginner mode on very first flight...on second flight, which was the next day, I was never prompted to log in and I flew to 398 feet..I remember the limitation red warning box was showing, but I had clearly busted that altitude limit...pretty sure, can't swear to it, I've Seen that pop up every flight since..I think I stopped paying attention to it since it didn't seem true.

If you did bust that limit, you were likely running old firmware on a newer version of DJI GO.

It is asking me to update, but I have to admit, I'm a bit nervous about doing it...I have an event Im going to and just yesterday decided to bring it with me...it is working now...I'm afraid I'll brick it if I do it before I go...unfortunately I find I've been spooked by some of the posts I read on this subject...I'm too new to this platform to apply common sense...lol

Oh yeah, I forgot, I'm not on newest version of DJI GO4, 4.0.12, I think .13 is the latest version. I havent checked what version the drone or controller have, I do know it started to go to install, after last flight, but I realized I was missing the cable to mate from lightning to microUSB on drone, so I cancelled the install, now I have cold feet.

Slick, check these out:

I keep one in every drone case. Insurance :)

well I updated the a/c to the latest firmware version and this seemed to eliminate the red error box poping up when I fire up everything.
I will be trying to make it's maden flight tomorrow morning.

I did my update through the dji assistant 2 and it worked perfect the first time.

beware sometimes the firmware up date will not work.
update at your own risk.

See that's what I'm afraid of, I'm torn between getting it right w/respect to up to date firmware/software & jeopardizing flying and learning on a currently functional addiction....er... drone

if it is working ok than don't mess with it.
use it like it is.

Well it's like your original post, it is telling me I need to update, and I have that same red box you described ...but I am not limited even though the red box says I am.
So listening to msinger post he indicates I probably could benefit from an update. So I'm sort of in your same situation, just that I know mine flies.

I just played with mine after charging the batterys.
the new upgrade seems to have fixed my red box error problem.
no more red box warning.
I removed the battery a couple of times and started and shut it down a couple of times and it worked fine with this new firmware upgrade.
this worked for me but it may not work for you.

That’s awesome...a big relief I bet. Once I get my cable in from iPad to drone...that’s what I’m going to do. Thanks for all the info, really helpful.
