What's with the ribbon cable and the USB connection?

The first version of the H3-3D (and the H2-3D) used the back connector on the GoPro for power and video out. I put electrical tape over the two exposed sections of ribbon cable to help protect against tearing.

Now the 1.1 version of the H3-3D uses a flimsy ribbon cable into the USB port with a huge, easy-to-tear loop in it. We also can't keep the side cover on the GoPro any more.

Can someone explain to me how this new design is anything other than stupid?
