Mavic Pro Crashes into Atlantic Ocean

My first reaction is amazement but shortly after that, I think I understand. I read and hear about "kids" buying a drone and immediately running out to "test the limits". What is the point of flying out 4 miles? What purpose does it fulfill. You only know it went that far by looking at a readout on a screen. Same for those trying to set an altitude record. BD, "before drones", test pilots got to do that by actually risking their lives so a certain amount of brains were required. Now the Walter Mittys can sit in the sand and send out the drone to do it for them. And to what purpose? Many, if not most test pilots eventually lose their lives and this young feller just lost his drone. Too bad, but he had it coming. I have 56 years and 13,000 hours flying everything from gyrocopters sitting on a lawn chair to B727s and I would not fly a small plane out 4 miles from shore. I have flown a single engine plane 500 miles out the Bahamas but I had a life raft and flotation gear on board. And I was ready to accept that I may end up floating around in the Atlantic Ocean for a bit. And if so, it would be my own calculated risk and I would not be asking anyone to protect me from my wife. I fear for the coming generation.

I went to your video all I saw was you telling the story no video of the flight.

There is a link to the flight video on the Go fund Me page. I watched, but it didn't show the A/C actually going into the water. Of all the videos I've watched of quads going into the water they all showed the camera going into the water just before loosing signal. In his video it looks like the Mavic is still a few feet up before the video cuts out.

Second the video has been edited as you can hear the sound of the controller beeping. As far as I know the Mavic doesn't record sound and even if it did you wouldn't hear it at that distance. We only have his word the Mavic went into the water or that he even had one in the first place.

I don't understand why people want to fly so far just because it can don't mean u have to I have a P3S and I have never taken it out of sight I just take it high enough and out enough for what I need.

I guess a go fund me account is easier than standing at an intersection with a sign that reads Drone Money Needed!

This is definitely fake, probably the same guy that keeps starting similar posts on this forum.
I don't think it was fake. He was posting videos on his Facebook page and talking about how far he was flying it each time. One of his friends posted the GoFundMe link to his timeline, if his wife had not noticed that the brand new toy was missing, that would have tipped it off to her.

I think the constant ridicule of his GoFundMe page led him to take it down.

So I purchased a DJI Mavic Pro on Friday. I got it for vacation with my daughters and wife at the beach. I took a number of flights. I decided to test the 4 mile range. I was super pumped as I hit four miles, but on the return flight, the wind picked up and... the drone crash landed about a half mile offshore. As you can imagine, I have yet to tell my wife the $1000 drone crashed in the ocean because of my stupidity, I am hoping to avoid that conversation with your support.

Here is a link to a gofundme if you see a video of me recounting the depressing story.

[QUOTE="Tim Dawes, post: 1218542,
I like flying my P3 over the water for precisely this reason. If somethings goes seriously wrong only the bird and my wallet get hurt. If I loose battery on return to home, better it go into the drink than on a person, car, house etc.
Point is whatever happens to or because of our drone is on us. We are ultimately responsible for it.
In terms of the go fund me thing: I can only hope it was a joke in VERY poor taste.
That's about as stupid as asking others for $$ because of a bad night at the casino.

Learn how to fly (not gps / stabilization assisted "controlling" - actually flying in full manual or "acro" mode (can't be done on a phantom /mavic)) and you don't have to worry about much if things go wrong. Getting it back home and on the ground safely is 2nd nature. Don't fly near people and you don't have to worry about the highly unlikely event of a motor or ESC failure, which would render skills useless.

DJI could incorporate an algorithm that would allow for loss of a single propulsion system and still make a soft landing, but they haven't. Others have accomplished it on other platforms though. It goes into a controlled spin and descends.

You are an attorney, you lost a Mavic and want a new one. I am divorced. I have permanent, reviewable alimony. $3,000 a month. I have been paying for 10 years. Here's the deal, make my alimony go away, and I'll buy you a brand new Inspire.
