I flew my standard yesterday and when I reached 394 feet, says that I reached the maximum altitude. I thought it was 400 feet the maximum legally allowed?

You can adjust the maximum allowed altitude in the following section of DJI GO:

A side comment, as many people seem to miss this:
- in the P3S world, altitude is relative to the Home Point
- the 400ft max altitude indicated by FAA is AGL (Above Ground Level)
If you take off from an elevated point and fly over a valley, for example, you might be at way more than 400ft AGL even if the altitude as reported by the P3S is well below 400ft. For the same reason, if you take off from a lower location and - say - climb up on the side of a mountain, you might be well within FAA limits even if the indicated altitude is above 400ft.

500 meters from home point
If you are in the US and set your aircraft to 500 meters altitude... You can get in trouble, specially if you collide with an airplane or helicopter.
