I’ve got the “late winter fever” to get my P3A in the air after some months of being idle.

It’s a cloudy overcast day here in the Midwest flatlands.

Is there an easy way to determine the height of the lower cloud base, as well as the upper?

Thanks!

The clouds are "This high"... (points towards the sky)..

If you need to stay 500 feet below, and you want to fly up to 400 feet, then you need at least 900 foot ceiling. Beyond 900 feet is just more safety cushion and that is fine.
To have "broken" or "overcast" at 900 feet is pretty darn low, and you can tell by looking quite accurately at that level.
The distances from clouds is always a judgement call by the pilot who is expected to try their best to maintain the legal distance.
As for the tops, drone pilots have no need for that information because we are not allowed 'on top'.
Every time you do know the bottoms of the clouds, look up. Get that picture in your mind cuz that's what 2000 foot ceilings looks like, etc. etc.
