3D Robotics Solo vs Dji Phantom 3 Pro

Thr range issue may be a red herring.

Why would they not provide the max RF output allowed for the control system?

Makes no sense.

Minimise flyaway I guess. Obviously, the closer you are, the less likely you will lose the Solo. They promise to replace camera if they are at fault so they would try and have the user have some LOS.

For what it's worth I am new to this market, and have been doing as much research as a noob can do before jumping in.

My very high level take was that the solo promos talk the right talk. By nature I like the concept of open source and modularity.
That said it comes with some problems (think iOS versus android or Mac versus pc) when it comes to control over the end to end product. On the flip side outsourcing the optics seems sound as it is hard to be a specialist in quad hardware and software / firmware and video/cameras/lenses.

DJI seem to have solid hardware and gimbles. Their software is good (but needs to keep improving on the user friendly follow-me, precanned short front based on the consumer comments).

It all boiled down to my end comment that I hope Solo is embraced and improved and proven by both the manufacturer and the community. But at this point I have to go with the manufacturer that has some iterative stability (for all the potential known issues) until that happens.

There is potential that in 12/18/24 months when I am ready to buy again that it's a hard decision between two proven and innovative options and I hope that's the case. I can't take that punt on a promise though and I think I'm not alone in that.

Last thought is the niche market. A lot of the people that would be wooed by the marketed features of the solo are further courted by the likes of lily and similar. A colleague is in that boat where he really wants to film his activity rather than pilot so solo might end up being the tablet stuck in the middle of the phone and PC.

I had the solo for 2 weeks and was disappointed in the range and performance. Returned it and got a p3. The phantom has at least 3 times the range and the video latency is much better. Not being a dji fanboy as I think the solo is a much better Looking machine but the performance and value are not there. Even my p1 had better range than the solo.

Sadly, the machine is not ready for prime time. Even Jim Bowers (Demunseed) who championed it says now to wait 6 months (at least, subject to reviews).
Customer service differences would be something to weigh if the craft worked to even a basic level and had the gimbal, etc.
In that case, a buyer could make a valid decision as to whether paying $400-$600+ more was worth the "extended warranty".
But if the craft doesn't work for even the basics - GPS assisted flight with gimbal and control - then it's not even of a level worthy of comparison.
You made the right decision if you want to actually use the machine for AP.

In the interest of accuracy: Where can I get Phantom 3 batteries for $120!!? And isn't "Follow Me" a promised P3 feature, yet to be delivered? Still glad I got a P3, ...just sayin'

I wonder if the Solo is due to get the latest GoPro camera - the Hero 4 Session...
