So I have been recently trying to update my phantom 3 advanced and I have had no luck. I turn on the drone and the gimbal flips out, I get video feed but can't see anything because the gimbal is moving so fast. It never finishes and has the issue of remo-con-disconnect when I look on the sd card when its done. Is the cable the reason why it refuses to update?
Will a frayed gimbal cable affect the update process on the Dji Phantom 3 Pro/Advanced?

It's quite possible. You will not be able to update the Phantom firmware if the gimbal/camera is not functioning properly
