While flying my phantom 4 I got a weak signal notice on my screen. Before I could land it disconnected and screen qent black. Tje drone wasn't far away in good sight and I was able to fly it back and land. What should I do if the drone was far enough away I couldn't tell which way it was going. If it was disconnected would it do any good to hit return home.
Not sure what to do in this case.

If it truly was disconnected, it should return on its own.
Check the aircraft settings to see what the return settings are set to. It’s been a while since I’ve had a P4 in the air and I don’t remember specifically what the setting options are but most DJI products allow for hover in place or head home.

The remote controller can no longer send commands to the drone after the uplink drops (if that's what happened).

The Phantom 4 has a built-in failsafe that allows it to automatically return back to the home point if the remote controller disconnects mid-flight. It would be best to utilize that functionality to ensure your drone safely returns home in such a case. The Phantom 4 manual covers that topic in great detail, so it would be best to review the manual if you're not sure how it works.

The video / telemetry are different channels from control. You may have just lost video feed. In that case, use the Go4 tools to check signal strength and interference in your area.

Find a clean channel. 5Ghz is usually the better choice for shorter flights.
