I was wondering on the phantom 3 how do I know when I should update the firmware on the drone, and 2 nd question is when I take photos or videos, after I download the photos or videos on my laptop, then I like to erace the items on the camera. that way I can take more photos and videos, and still keep the sd card in the dji camera, does that make sence, any advice helpful. thanks

The DJI Go app should let you know when a firmware update is available.
The reason I said "should" is because the app works between your Phantom and DJI'S service, so that it knows what's available, and what is on the bird.
If you happen to never connect your device to the internet, it will not know.

When you transfer your images & videos from the SD card to your computer, you can copy them OR move them.
Moving them does just what it says, and moves them OFF of the card, and ON to your computer.
Otherwise, to answer your 2nd question, yes it makes sense to free the space up by deleting them from the SD card once they've been copied to your computer.
