Passed the written exam... Now off to the FSDO

I'm lost as well. I completed the Part 107 on line course and have certificate in hand, went to the IACRA web site, logged in, ( I hold an ATP, Commercial, and several other pilot ratings), yet when I click on #2 Certifications, I see all the regular selections but no "Remote Pilot" choice. Has anyone with a pilots license ran into this as well? What am I missing here?

Ah man so it sounds like we'll be in a holding pattern til Aug. :(

DPE/FSDO is only for a temporary certificate correct? You can just get a CFI sign off and wait for the certificate in the mail?

Negative, a CFI/DPE/Inspector can sign off the application as a verification of identity (similar to an endorsement in IACRA). Only a DPE or Inspector can sign off the Temporary Remote Pilot Certificate.

Roger, that's what I meant. Do we need to get the Temporary Remote Pilot Certificate sign off? Trying to avoid going to FSDO/DPE. That's just the paper one before the real one comes in the mail right?

Yes, you will need to get the Temporary Remote Pilot Certificate printed and signed by a DPE or FAA Inspector at the FSDO.

Passed the test! Can we schedule appt with FSDO ahead of time or we have to wait til it shows in IACRA? Never dealt with the FSDO but I've heard things can take a long time there.

I cannot attest to the scheduling timeframes for any FSDO. My best guess is many of the inspectors have little to no idea that they will be performing these endorsements. I'd wait until the day the regulation is effective to call. That way you can have a reference to cite when they say "A Remote Pilot Certificate? WTF is that? I've never heard of that". Then bust out your far/aim and respectfully educate them appropriately.

Took the online course for pilots and passed. I found it very informative. I think the FAA really got it right with 107.

Congrats on the 107. What study guide are you using? I started with "Study Buddy" and it is oriented just to private pilot, nothing on flying a drone.

Larr,
I didn't use a study. I took the course and test blind. That course is for individuals who currently hold a pilot certificate. I found that most of the questions on that test aligned closely with a private/sport pilot knowledge exam. That's why I recommended using the Sportys Private Pilot Study Buddy App. If a person used that app and was able to comfortably answer the weather sections, airspace, charts and publications, and aerodynamics questions... they would have an idea of what type of questions are on the written test.

Step 1: Print FAAST Completion Certificate
Step 2: Complete IACRA Application for a new pilot certificate for "Remote Pilot Certificate" (https://iacra.faa.gov)
Step 3: Find/Hire a CFI/DPE/FAA Inspector to verify your application and endorse it.
Step 4: Schedule appointment at FSDO. No walk-ins allowed.
Step 5: Present FAA Inspector your current pilot certificate, Logbook endorsement of a current Biennial Flight Review, Completion certificate of the FAAST Exam, and a valid form of I.D. as outlined in the FARs
Step 6: Receive Temporary "Remote Pilot Certificate".

*It is to the best of my knowledge that the option for a Remote Pilot Certificate application will not be in IACRA until 8/2016.

SweatpantsDroner:

No. You've combined both procedures, and paper vs. IACRA.

IF you're a Part 61 certificate holder, and are submitting thru IACRA, steps 1,2,3 and 6 will be correct.

IF you're a Part 61 certificate holder, and are submitting a paper application (I don't remember the number for the form, but it will be some variant of an FAA Form 8710, then steps 1,3,5 and 6 will apply.

IF you're NOT a Part 61 certificate holder, you'll have to take the Knowledge Test at an approved FAA testing center (check either CATS or LaserGrade for locations. After you have the test results you can either file via IACRA (iacra.faa.gov) or do the paper. An IACRA application goes in, and will then be vetted by TSA, then returned to the FAA for processing. Expect a three to four week delay minimum in receiving a certificate. I strongly recommend against a paper application under this scenario - the delays will be extensive, as the paperwork will have to be physically transferred beween the FAA and the TSA.

Good luck, everyone. The IACRA availability is estimated to be late August, 2016.

I'm sorry but I believe all steps are required in the process, unless you have a DPE or FAA Inspector verify your identity, endorse your application on IACRA, and sign the printed temporary airman certificate, or you don't want a Tempeary certificate... In that case you just need a CFI. Here is where I received my information:
Becoming a Pilot

Existing Pilots – What to Expect
Eligibility:

  • Must hold a pilot certificate issued under 14 CFR part 61
  • Must have completed a flight review within the previous 24 months
Remote Pilot Certificate Requirements

  • Must be easily accessible by the remote pilot during all UAS operations
  • Valid for 2 years – certificate holders must pass either a recurrent online training course OR recurrent knowledge test every two years
Application Process:

  1. Complete the online training course "Part 107 small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) ALC-451" available on the FAA FAASTeam website – initial training course areas include:
    1. Applicable regulations relating to small unmanned aircraft system rating privileges, limitations, and flight operation
    2. Effects of weather on small unmanned aircraft performance
    3. Small unmanned aircraft loading and performance
    4. Emergency procedures
    5. Crew resource management
    6. Determining the performance of small unmanned aircraft
    7. Maintenance and preflight inspection procedures
  2. Complete FAA Form 8710-13 (FAA Airman Certificate and/or Rating Application for a remote pilot certificate)
    1. Online or by paper (see instructions in previous section)
  3. Validate applicant identity
    1. Contact a FSDO, an FAA-designated pilot examiner (DPE), an airman certification representative (ACR), or an FAA-certificated flight instructor (CFI) to make an appointment.
    2. Present the completed FAA Form 8710-13 along with the online course completion certificate or knowledge test report (as applicable) and proof of a current flight review.
    3. The completed FAA Form 8710-13 application will be signed by the applicant after the FSDO, DPE, ACR, or CFI examines the applicant's photo identification and verifies the applicant's identity.
      1. The identification presented must include a photograph of the applicant, the applicant's signature, and the applicant's actual residential address (if different from the mailing address). This information may be presented in more than one form of identification.
      2. Acceptable methods of identification include, but are not limited to U.S. drivers' licenses, government identification cards, passports, and military identification cards (see AC 61-65 Certification: Pilots and Flight and Ground Instructors)
    4. The FAA representative will then sign the application.
  4. An appropriate FSDO representative, a DPE, or an ACR will issue the applicant a temporary airman certificate (a CFI is not authorized to issue a temporary certificate; they can process applications for applicants who do not want a temporary certificate).
  5. A permanent remote pilot certificate will be sent via mail once all other FAA-internal processing is complete.

Where did these steps come from and what are they for exactly? Are we just predicting roughly what the real steps will be (for those without pilot's license?)

Those steps are my idea/prediction/layman term of what to expect for those who currently hold a pilot certificate issued under Part 61.
