I usually have 12 in Maryland make sure your not being blocked by trees even the Best GPS has a difficult time when under a canopy of leaves.
 
I don't know have walked with it all over out here it don't seem to want to connect
if your in a wide open space nothing to block GPS signal and still not connecting I'm thinking you have a connection in the AC that's come loose or your GPS module isn't working
 
yes you GPS is in the very top of the drone. I would take the top off and make sure everything is connected up inside as a first step to troubleshooting the problem. check Youtube for disassembly videos there are a ton of them. these drones like any aircraft have a vibration however slight it may be it still has it no avoiding it especially with props beating the air. its possible something wasn't connected good at the factory and has loosened up since day one. just the nature of the beast
