I live very close to Foxwoods Casino and would like to launch my P3S from the roof of the parking garage, circle the high rise, land and leave. The entire casino complex sits in the middle of the country side and at night it is lit up like Las Vegas. Do you think I should ask permission or just go for it?

As a casino worker myself.... I would say ask. They get really funny about this kind of stuff. They could say that you are trying to "peep" into the hotel windows. Call and ask for the Director of Security as it would be him (or her) that would make this decision. Another guy I work with has a P3P and they actually want us to come do a circle around the building. They want a copy of the video/photos to possibly use it in advertising. Sounds like a good time and we told them that when it gets nicer outside, we'll do it.

Can you imagine how many cameras would be able to view this procedure being done.

I doubt it would possible to get to the roof of a parking garage of a casino with out being detected.

I say go for it and use a picture of George clooney

You are technically within 5 miles of an airport at Foxwoods, and would be taking off/landing from private property. Covering all bases would require giving notice to the nearby airport, take off/land from public property (or obtain permission from Foxwoods), and operate under the usual FAA hobbyist guidelines.

You seriously don't think you could do this without being detected? Just cuz you see the drone doesn't mean you see the pilot. Arm LEDs gotta be off, probably a 90 second flight. If I ask, I know its no, because it probably really isn't a proper thing to do. People could be down there, etc. Its outside 5 mi from GrotonNL airport, I'm sure.

It sounds like your question is "could" verses "should". Myself and others mentioned the concerns. Additionally, you are within range of Foxwoods CoGen (technically a power plant), Wychwood Field, and a private heliport.

There is an inherent risk to every flight you make with a drone, and your proposed flight is somewhere in the middle. It isn't the riskiest flight, but it certainly has the potential to get you into trouble. If something goes wrong, you could be in bigger trouble. On the other hand, more than likely everything will go just fine. I think you'll eliminate one risk by taking off somewhere off property, as taking off from the top of the parking garage is definitely a higher risk. You could, as others have mentioned, contact the owners and propose to give them the video for their own use and that might sweeten the pot enough to give you permission. However, if they say no, now you are at higher risk of getting caught and they can identify you as the pilot.

This is a very interesting thread think about it.

You made the flight anyway and didn't ask anyone's permission and did not post about it on any forum. You made the video edit and posted it.

I bet 90% of people would say how good it was etc and maybe a few would ask you about your regard for the risks and for others.

Or second you post about it 1st then make the flight regardless of anyone comments on here. Then you make the video edit and maybe people are kind worded maybe not. That's betting flight goes smooth.

Third you make the flight regardless and something goes wrong. Now you screwed lol.

The drone / flying to make great videos is certainly a tricky subject just regarding how new it is with so many uncertain truths and laws.

God never had this issue when I were a boy lol.

Sorry this post really won't help you at all, I was just typing my thoughts out loud. :)

I know one thing... I bet Casey neistat would do it lol.

"But Officer, over at Phantompilots.com they said I could ..."

You asking here? If you have to ask ... Don't believe the above will get you out of any entanglements you might run into ....

Obviously I'm not asking permission, but I was trying to poke around at what others do or might do. I do not want to crash or lose my precious, and I do not want to get arrested. However, its winter here in New England, days are short and so its nights and weekends for flying. So, I try to think of subjects that are lit up, that would make interesting pictures or videos. The mission itself, and the intrigue of sneaking, having my buddies as spotters, making the getaway, ya, just fun talk.
