LITCHI - Phantom 4 Pro

Now that I got to know Autopilot very well, I am going to get into Litchi, planning on buying it this week. Both are great Apps with professional cinematic results.
I just do not see myself flying a Phantom without either app. This could be case if buying the P4 Pro with integrated screen, no third party apps, autonomous flying only with DJI Go App.

Strange how Litchi can have a huge influence over the launch of a new DJI product, surely DJI must adapt their DJI Go to be acceptable to their mainstream user base.
Must be something to do with liability.

The execution of flight and camera control sequences are very difficult to impossible to perform manually and can be easily accomplished with Apps like AP or Litchi. Both apps have the ability to unlock the full potential of the drones.
Unfortunately it is hard to obtain the same results in AP or Litchi with DJI Go App intelligent flight modes.

Yes many of my videos would be impossible to complete without Litchi. I am beginning to sound like a fanboy.

Lol, I concur.

While I do not know the capabilities of Litchi, the general consensus is its a great App. Over the next few days I am going to purchase the app to get acquainted in the winter months and be ready for spring. All of my videography has been captured using Autopilot.

I realize that the P4P transmitter and attached display run Android and apparently only run DJI GO. That would be fine if DJI GO had the features that people need (if it did, people would be buying AP or Litchi).

But how about the P4P version without the built in display? Will that allow use of Litchi or AP just like with the Phantom 4? DJI went to the trouble of developing an SDK for third-party flight software. Are they abandoning the concept?

You don't need to buy it yet. Go to this link, then go to Mission Hub. You can zoom in on the map to where you want to fly and make a mission by paying around with the tools..........

The issue being discussed is that the dedicated monitor on expensive controller might not allow loading of other apps (This has not been confirmed).
Using other tablets on the cheaper controller, you can still use other apps.

I agree 100%. I am pretty excited about the P4P, but not being able to use it with Litchi is enough to make me just say no. Litchi allows long, elaborate sequences that I could NOT get 100% right flying manually if I tried all day long. Here are some things I did with Litchi flying autonomously with waypoints and my P3A:

Other Android apps can definitely be installed on the built-in display. It's not clear as to whether or not 3rd party apps can be used to fly the Phantom though.

If your gong to use 3rd party apps I would get the standard RC version as pre planning on an integrated screen will be a pita.

Then consider Crystalsky later if your wanting but I'd still go iPad mini 4 tbh.

That's my point, on the first few minutes of your first video, Kennedy Elementary School, the rotation movement while moving forward is nearly impossible to achieve flying manually.

Nice videos btw.

This is interesting. If other Android apps can be installed on the built-in display then the only prohibiting factor would be, as you note, if DJI decided to prevent 3rd party apps from controlling the unit. But since DJI has not prevented this on other models (even though they no doubt could if they wanted to) then there doesn't appear to be any logical reason why they would try to prevent it on the P4P+.

Without Litchi it will be an step backwards, no autonomous flying except for the integrated DJI Go App intelligent flight modes.
I'm glad I ordered the standard controller, nothing wrong by using my iPad Mini 4 / iPhone 7Plus for DJI Go and Autopilot. :)

For what I understand one of the selling points of the built in monitor is resolution and brightness for when flying out in a sunny day. There is a setting in Android / iOS devices that disabled the automatic brightness of the display in sunny days.
Litchi told me they will support P4P but have to wait for DJI to give them the DEV KIT>

Yes, as was pointed out in another thread by a DJI rep there is no SDK out yet for the P4Pro so presumably 3rd party apps cannot yet be made available for either P4Pro model. When an SDK is released it seems certain the Litchi will support the P4Pro, the only question is whether there will be some reason that it can't run on the built-in Android OS. My guess is that it will but that just can't be known for a few months.

I would have been inclined to go with the built in... but it was simply too small for my preference... if they make a larger one in the future, I would certainly consider it.

Also I think DJI should be careful about proprietary stuff... if you start limiting the consumer choice (say Litchi and other apps won't work on the built in's) you will immediately lose customers.

Probably just a matter of trying to keep the price point reasonable. The 5.5" display already adds $300 to the cost of an already pricey model, and if the CrystalSky projected prices are any example the 7.8" display probably would have added a lot more. You can always go for the display-less P4Pro and add the CrystalSky 7.8" unit, but man, that extra screen real estate is really gonna cost ya. The other option is to continue to use a consumer tablet but for me, BTDT, no thanks. Personally I'm happy to get a pro-quality dedicated display, and for that I guess I can live with the 5.5" size.

Keep in mind that the 300$ extra for the built in screen include also the HDMI and SD slot on the RC which would amount alone 100$ if you upgrade afterwards by your own...so maybe 200$ for the screen, the crystalsky will for sure be 500$ alone, my guess

I don't want to be hamstrung by DJI Go's rather limited feature set. I'm going to hold off on a P4P until the user base weighs in on it and confirms its third-party compatibility.

None of the 3rd-party control apps have been updated for any of the new models yet but they in all likelihood will. The only thing preventing it would be if DJI decided to bar them but if they haven't so far they probably won't now (and if they ever decide to what are you going to do, buy a Karma? ;) )

In the drone world there's just no end to 'I'm gonna wait for... "
