Flying over water

I flew in Miami Beach twice yesterday over water:

The second flight was at Maurice Gibb Memorial Park right by Venetian Causeway, but I haven't posted those pictures yet (probably tonight).

Great... I need to hear that you're in Miami Beach. We're in the middle of a big *** snow storm with temps around zero... :( :( :(

If your flying over fresh water then maybe floats would allow you to salvage some parts from the phantom if it were to get submerged. The electrics are probably a right off though.

Many folks would be surprised that "the electrics" of the Phantom are not a write off after being submerged in fresh water.

Instead of using foam floats of questionable effectiveness that carry a windage penalty folks would be better off spending a few bucks on one of these:

http://www.water-buoy.com/

I have been waiting for these to get back in stock since getting the Vision; the US dealer for them has been out of stock. You would need two of them to keep the Vision afloat. I'm sure it would be damaged, especially in salt water but at least you could recover it and have something to repair.

Spending $35 (for two) just to keep your P2V from sinking, but guarantee
that it is submerged... seems like a sub-optimal choice.

With inexpensive foam pontoons, at least there is the chance that the
P2V would stay upright, at least in calm water with not much wind.

To be more effective against tipping over, the floats need to stick out
roughly past the tips of the blades, perhaps as a cross located to avoid
prop downwash, as much as is possible. A diamond-shaped cross section
might help the downward air flow past the pontoons, and perhaps help with
a cleaner, less "sticky" takeoff. A large quarter-round on the outer ends of the
pontoons might help to keep them from "digging in" as it landed.

Easier to attach might be a cross oriented under the P2V's arms.

Coating all the electronics (but maybe not the heat sinks) with a
waterproof, non-conductive conformal coating might be a good idea,
keeping it thin to reduce excess weight. Somewhere in this forum,
I believe, somebody was "advertising" their special super-thin
waterproof coating, but it was a bit expensive for them to apply
it properly, around $300 as I recall.

I do have the P2V now, and hope to get in some beginner's flights soon.

However, I will be avoiding flying near or over water, at least for now.

Yea lol, my hometown in NY had a storm today too with like 3 ft. of snow.

Love your video of the fireworks!!! I was just discussing that concept with my wife! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks! If I do it again, I'll probably record the sound from the ground separately and sync it up later (or at least add decent music). Now I got a good feel for the positioning too.

I was planning on flying there this weekend! Do you live in the area?

Not in Miami, but I live a little bit north in Coconut Creek.

Edit: Here's a panorama shot taken from the NW side of Miami Beach, FL:

I stumbled across a YouTube video last night of a guy crashing his Phantom into a freshwater stream where it stayed fully submerged for 2 -3 minutes. Surprisingly, he took it home, dryed it out with a hair dryer and everything including GoPro and Gimbal worked fine and continued to indefinitely!

I guess the moral to the story is don't give up and assume all is lost. I'm now thinking that even if my worse nightmare happens, crashing in salt water, I may be able to rinse it out with distelled water (or better yet, alcohol) and keep my fingers crossed. :)

I did a flight over water in my backyard (brackish saltwater off the Chesapeake Bay) on my 2nd flight with the Phantom 2 Vision. Sorry for the shakiness and amateur editing, still just a beginner. My concern (besides turning my drone into a submarine, of course) was what would happen flying over a flock of water-born Canada Geese or Mallard ducks? Would a flock of geese take off in a panic, risking a mid-air collision with the Phantom? Could the rotors accidentally decapitate a goose? Would my drone end up sleeping with the fish? The result:

Glad to see it didn't :D It always surprises me how wildlife does not seem to be too bothered by the drone. I would recommend no more water flights though until your Phantom has a few more flights under its belt. I still fear the dreaded power loss fault due to solder contacts coming loose in flight. This has happened to some people on their very first flight and in other reports its taken about 20 flights for the fault to appear. Then again some pilots have hundreds of flights with no problems so not all Phantoms are affected by this.

By the way you have a lovely home there.

I think the benefits out way the risks,
I've seen plenty of videos on youtube of phantom 1 over the water and was keen to do the same.
now if i could get smoother video in windy condition things would look a lot better

Being in a boat gave a bit more confidence that if the phantom did start to descend maybe i could turn back and chase it, however most of the time probably wouldn't have been possible. Ive had no problems with my PV2 and have been flying over water since the beginning.

They sink too fast to turn a boat around and retrieve them in deep water.

Cheap insurance if you're flying over water:

Thanks for the tip. Any idea how much it weighs? (the water buoy, not the Phantom)

Also, it looks like they're sold-out in the U.S.

I had a nice flight over xmas break, out at Table Rock Dam in MO. It was below a big dam, and there would be little chance of recovering the drone if it fell in the cold flowing water. There were also some big vultures that rested on the structure of the dam, and I didn't want to disturb them, and some power lines that I didn't want to get too close to. I did a few exploratory flights to test the conditions before going all the way out, but you can't get cool shots without accepting some risk.

If you never try you'll never know. Just make sure your phantom is solid. Our vacation vid.

Very Nice!!!

Did you shoot in ProTune? What software did you use for enhancing? Did you use a polarizing filter to reduce the glare on the water?

Thanks! No protune. I used gopro studio 2.0 correct the color manually. I didn't use a filter. But now you mention it ill get a filter :D can't wait to get my hands on the new Phantom 2.

How many of you fly over water? I live in Miami Beach and I am fly mainly in land but I am tempted to fly out pass the docks and experiment but scared! Any precautions you guys take when flying over lakes and such?

Hi, you mean something like this?

http://vimeo.com/82795662

It's pretty hard to avoid flying over water where I am.I'm surrounded by swamps, creeks, river, ponds, and the largest tidal saltwater lake in the southern hemisphere and the ocean are only a few kilometers away.
I have only ended up with the Phantom in the water once and I blame the tree for that.It should have held onto it but dropped it into the water.
Most of my Phantom flight videos feature water,a couple of good examples;

I'm traveling now and don't have the video clip with me to show you, but I just got a polarizing filter and did one quick test flight over water and it helps tremendously in cutting the glare on the water and giving the colors more punch. The only thing you have to watch is that they work best when positioned 90 degrees to the sun, so if you're panning around in many different directions it can start doing weird things to the sky.

I only have two flights on my new Phantom 2, but so far, so good. I can't wait to get home next week to fly again!

P.S. - I'm also looking at the "water-buoy" that someone else here had recommended as much of my flying will be over water and I'd like to have something to salvage if I ever dunk it ;-)
