P3 Firmware Can i only update TX and not Phantom?

Hi, i am having trouble with my new Shield tablet not recognizing the remote when its attached. Can i upgrade just the TX firmware through the usb port and not upgrade the phantom itself? Will the controller still work with the older firmware on the phantom? I think my TX wont connect to my tablet because the firmware on it is old....1.1.9 or something like that. Thanks!

You can upgrade only the remote, but to the best of my knowledge, the remote firmware version and your ability to connect to the DJI app have no relation to each other. If its a P3S its connected by wifi, and the others by the usb cable. check which ever of those you have to make sure they are working right.
