can the autopilot app be used in place of the DJI go app ??? as I cannot used the DJI go app on my iPhone 5.

Yes but there is no guarantee that it will work on your phone if DJI Go did not work.

You'll need to use DJI GO to register your Phantom before you can fly with other 3rd party apps.

I registered using my tablet....and gyroscope needed to be calibrated. Works with the DJI go App on my tablet...but my 10 inch tablet is too big for mounting on the rc control. The auto pilot app is not able to fly it. Getting a refund hopefully from iTunes.
