Newbie here. When the red/yellow light is flashing, will the joystick start the motors? Mine won't,

Red/Yellow is telling you there is an issue and you DO NOT want to fly. Try calibrating the compass. Switch the GPS/ATTI switch up and down 8 times and the light goes steady. rotate the copter 360 degrees until the light blinks green. Now turn it on its side and rotate it that way 360 degrees until the light goes off. Compass calibrated.
