Hi all, noobie here. I just wanted to throw out the latest info on my used P3 standard video transmission problems in rural areas, 5 feet away from the drone.
Yes I did crash the drone when I first got it. The camera separated from the drone and ripped the ribbon. I replaced all that and the camera still takes ok pics. I was mainly concerned about killing the gps but it's ok too. This thread is for new drone pilots learning how to fly. So using old drones is perfect for that. If you know how to fix this stuff for the new guys considering the latest firmware updates that would be great.

So I upgraded to drone firmware 1.9.2 and now I find out I shouldn't have. I use a 16gb sd card.
I use DJI Go app 3.1.82
and I run a LG V35 running android v 9. It does not have a SIM card installed

I have a heck of a time getting my drone's wifi to connect. I turn the airplane mode on and off, open and close the dji go app. It takes about ten minutes to connect, obtaining ip address... Once that is connected, I open the app and it may show disconnected for a bit or connected with a frozen video and most times over exposed with zebra stripes. I get the stripes even if the drone is facing away from the sun. But not a black screen (except when still disconnected cause the wifi network dropped off). I try to play around with the camera settings to get a normal pic going but most of the time it's unresponsive. So I am hitting white balance settings or shutter speeds and nothing is happening. I also try resetting the camera settings too. It's hit or miss. It took three flights today just to get a couple of normal pics. It doesn't matter how far away I am from the drone and I am out in the country with no real interference. So I know the camera has the ability to take ok pics it's just that I can't control the settings and of course the video is frozen. And it won't take any pics if the video is frozen.

The connection from the controller to the drone is fair. Every once in awhile I'll get "signal lost". But I just fly back or it just regains the signal. It really hasn't been much of a problem because I don't go too far yet. I don't feel comfortable getting too far away without a video feed. I don't lose control of the drone or the gimbal.

Ive tried all the trouble shooting steps like battery optimization off etc on the phone.

Realistically, is there anyway to downgrade the firmware without bricking it? Now I know there is tons of stuff to read about these transmission problems but since the threads are so old they really don't address the versions I am running. So I did a Grok search and Grok said the latest stable version was 1.7.90 compatible with app version 3.1.5 using Android v 8. You can use Android 9, if you set some permissions, battery optimization, stabilize wifi, clear app data etc. which I have done.

Any help would be appreciated. Its not time for me to get a new drone......yet.

Welcome to the Forum.

Yes, firmware updates are not recommended since the DJI Phantom 3 series is no longer supported by DJI. Downgrading is possible however.

DJI Phantom 3 Standard Accessories & Tips | Phantom Help

Check out msingers site 'Phantomhelp.com' for your downgrade firmware archive. Be sure to select Phantom 3 Standard from the dropdown menu. The firmware archive is at the bottom of the listing.

(I myself use 1.05.07 for my P3 Standards. None of that 'GeoFencing' garbage that DJI imposed from 1.06.08 forward)

Question: When you replaced the camera/gimbal ribbon cable, did you use a DJI OEM part, or a third party part? Non- DJI branded parts like ribbon cables are notorious for being defective or of very poor quality in data transfer.

I'd recommend to only use DJI OEM ribbon cable Part #85. It comes in a smoke-colored bag from DJI. The correct ribbon cable may solve your camera issues.

it looks like you can't get them anymore from dji
There are a few authorized DJI sellers out there that may have them.

They will look like this.

***Unless it says Genuine OEM DJI Part # 85, manufactured by DJI, AVOID IT. There are countless knockoffs out there that rarely work correctly.***

****Plus, if it is listed for $15-$20 it is probably a third party part........just saying...........****

I see that you are back.

Had it worked correctly before your 2023 post?
Has it worked correctly since 2023?
I bought my P3S in 2015, did you buy this new,

Firmware is the LAST thing to mess with on a P3S.

I will have many more questions, depending on your reply.

All most forgot Welcome Back. :) 👌

I contacted dji and they are not selling those ribbons anymore, I checked amazon and there are several listings that say they are oem but I don't think they are. They are made by Glintique or imusk.

DJI did send me a link to genuine firmware files. Here it is: Firmware files

I am going to attempt to downgrade the firmware.

You mentioned running 1.5.7, is there any place I can find what each version did?

Hey, thank you, yes I found my way back. I was so disappointed in my crash and I couldn't find a place to fly wo obstructions. I checked out the camera after I got it back together and it was fine. Soooo

Had it worked correctly before your 2023 post? It might have been my first or second flight I crashed it so I really don't remember, I was trying do something that was beyond my experience at the time.

Has it worked correctly since 2023? I just found a rc field so I have been flying this past spring. I had connection problems at the field but the guys there said it was because of the awning we were under. But it wouldn't connect out in the field either. I am referring to the connecting to the phantom network.

I bought my P3S in 2015, did you buy this new? No I bought it used from a guy who took real good care of it. It came with a very good case.

So I am still having problems with it connecting to the network and then once it is connected, the video transmission is awful.

OK, I found the ribbon I replaced in 2023, oem, so they say at this website Gimbal Flat Ribbon Cable for Phantom 3 Standard

It was the gimbal flat ribbon flex cable

I don't know what it does but I am having problems getting my android to connect to the Phantom network and then video transmission from the drone to the rc to the phone, I guess.

Oh I did check my pics, it was my second flight I crashed it.

"You mentioned running 1.5.7, is there any place I can find what each version did?"

Not sure who stated that, I know it wasn't I or CMH.

Firmware is the last thing to mess with on these DJI Birds. The P3S is at the my top.
My signature "P3S => Fly-it or Fryware-it (Rod)"

Phantom 3 Standard, Fly It or Fry it with Firmware.

Hey Rod, that was me that said I run 1.5.07 firmware on my standards (post #2).

I also provided the link to what each firmware version does from DJI (post 13 & 15). DJI's crappy GeoFencing stuff was hidden in firmware version 1.06.08 with NO indication it was there. Pretty sneaky. So that's why I downgraded firmware back to 1.5.7 on both my P3 Standards, and have left it that way since April of 2016. It will snow in h3LL before I update them. 😆
