Total Noob needs guidance

I just got my P3P and had ordered prop guards. I installed them but now wonder if they are necessary or affect performance. Also, the instructions call for using a string around the guards to further protect the props. Is this a total noob mistake? Thoughts? Should I use these? What about string?

this shows some tests with and with out prop guards. they are a nice thing to have if you accidentally run into something and could partially save an arm if you hit something. and I'd say are necessary in flying indoors or near people. it will make seeing things at the top of your shot a lot more likely when going fast.
