I'm experiencing an issue that doesn't seem normal. Anyone have an idea what could be happening?

This mornings flight conditions were ok; wind was nominal, compass and IMU in calibration, firmware was current on both. Hover checks went well. But when I lifted off to altitude the craft started to roll (laterally) all the way up. The remote was checked, but the control sticks where in good working order. I'm lost on what I should check next.

Try uploading your flight log from this flight. See the link below, and follow the instructions. Then if you wish others to look, share a link to that back here. You may be able to determine the issue yourself, but as I said, share the link if you need help. If we need more than that, we will let you know.

Had a "doh" moment. When I flew today, I tried my hand at flying totally manual, no controlling software. The ESC(s) were probably not adjusting.

Well you didn't say that. Drift is normal in ATTI mode. The AC has no positional information and only controls it's altitude via the barometer. Any winds will make this worse. I am assuming you meant in ATTI mode. That is basically hand flying.
