I keep hearing about s1/s2 changing to failsafe, atti, etc.... yet I see nothing in the manuals about this

That's Naza-M mode. I highly recommend you switch to it -- as it will give your more options if you get into trouble.

OP, is your transmitter S1 switch making good contact? These seem to wear out and get glitchy with repeated compass calibrations. At least make sure with the Assistant.

My 1st ever DJI quad I lost to a fly away due to a bad S1 swiitch. If you barely touched it, it would unknowingly go into atti mode.

Btw, NAZA Mode is the best option. msinger is right, many more flying options.

I already had a bad S2 switch I replaced myself, S1 seems to be behaving itself in the RC Assistant.

If he is keeping it upto date hem ight want to add a missing data point that caused my S2 to not function after changing over: when he shows how to change to this mode, he should also show you MUST click the little box at top left of IOC page or S2 does NOTHING as I found out today....
