P3A Gimbal Going Crazy After Crash - But All Motors Aligned

Hey there,

Recently I crashed my Phantom 3 Advanced, the only thing on the drone that broke was the roll arm on the gimbal (specifically, the ring around the roll motor).

After I bought the replacement roll arm part, and before it arrived. I attempted to turn on the drone at home while semi-attaching the broken roll arm to the roll motor, just to see how it was doing and even though the roll motor had trouble spinning correctly (understandly, as the arm was broken), it was indeed able to rotate and center the camera correctly, just like before the crash. This confirms that no sensors or cables were damaged as a result of the crash (because the gimbal sensors and cables were working correctly afterwards)

Now, the replacement roll arm part arrived, I dissassembled the necessary pieces of the gimbal as carefully as I could, replaced the broken roll arm, and put it all back together.

But now when I turn on the drone the gimbal goes crazy, not side to side but as if the camera is trying to look backwards, to one of the max-turn corners it can turn to (most left down or most right down, etc).

I figured one of the motors is not aligned, so I checked all the motors and their potentiometers.
  1. The yaw motor, on the base of the gimbal is aligned with the flat side to the small black screw and the black screw is tight.
  2. I checked and aligned the roll motor, made sure the flat side is facing the drone when the roll arm is level
  3. I checked the pitch motor (the one that directly holds and turns the camera) and I actually wasn’t sure if the flat side is supposed to face the camera’s forward direction (where the lens is looking, to be specific) or the other way around - so I tried both, multiple times, and it didn’t fix the issue.
So my question is, what could be the problem? And which way is the pitch motor supposed to face? (flat side looking at the same direction as the camera or opposite?)
Thanks!

PS. I feel my thread is somewhat related to this one, except in my case I was able to confirm the gimbal was working after the crash, and before the roll arm replacement.

Update: I tried updating/reinstalling the firmware, hoping it would work. The firmware update was successful but after it was done, I rebooted the drone and the gimbal still did the crazy dance, so no chance.
I inspected the flat ribbon cable up close and saw a little dent in the cable, perhaps that's the root of the problem? But again this doesn't make sense to me because the gimbal was working fine (centering) before I replaced the broken roll arm. I could order a new ribbon cable, but would rather avoid it if it's not necessary.

You could have inadvertently damaged the ribbon cable during the process.

Welcome to the forum!

Hum, kind of what @GFields stated.

Firmware is the last thing I would try, it was working fine with the firmware.

Most important to me, stay with this thread!

At the moment I can't think of the P3* members for me to bug.

They will come!
Awesome Forum

Hey guys, back with an update: The gimbal replacement ribbon cable finally arrived, and after carefully replacing the entire flat ribbon cable, I am happy to announce the DJI gimbal works again! Upon turning on it does the calibration dance and then centers perfectly just like before.

Oh, and to answer my own question in the original post, the pitch motor steel rod flat part should face away from the camera's front (meaning just to be clear, flat side faces the same side as the back of the camera).

Thanks everyone for your help and advice! I have definitely learned a big lesson in flying carefully and more slowly from now on, hopefully this will be my last crash ever.

@ZeroByter,
That is Great!

But, you do remember in the terms that you now have to help others on this forum for at least 2 years. :) 👌

I have the same problem with the crazy camera on my Phantom 3 Pro after a hard landing! I have done everything mentioned including replacing the potentiometer. I replaced the ribbon cable twice, second time when I took the gimble apart to make sure I did everything correct the first time. So should I reinstall the firmware? Could someone give me good instructions on how to do it, including where to find the latest version. Thanks for your help

A couple questions to start off with....

Did you use genuine OEM DJI ribbon cable(s) ?

Is the camera issue the only current issue, i.e.,does the drone fly ok other than the camera issue?

Any other info you can provide will help.........

**Updating firmware should be a LAST resort when all else fails.

Plus......Welcome to the Forum ! !

Thanks, glad to be part of the forum!
First answer, both the ribbon cables that I installed were not OEM but came from different sources.
The issue with the crazy gimble seems to be my only problem, other then now I get the notification that the gimble is overheating. All the controls seem to work correct except have some problem calibrating the compass, since the bad landing. I have moved about 600 miles. I am using DJI GO as the app with my iPhone 6 plus.

Unfortunately, non-OEM DJI ribbon cables are notorious for being cheap copies of the original design by DJI. Even if somehow it does work, it's usually not for very long. I'd recommend replacing the ribbon cable with a OEM genuine part #49. It will be in a smoke colored bag/ package from DJI. The gimbal overheating alert is due to the roll motors trying to keep up with mixed signals.

Just take your time replacing the ribbon cable. They are extremely delicate.

Anxious to get the drone working correctly again, have not had any problems for a long time. Where do you suggest I order the ribbon from to be sure it is not counterfeit? (djioemparts.com)? I have had a problem with fake packaging in the past. Could the ribbon problem account for compass not wanting to calibrate?
Thanks much for helping

Yep, that 'djioemparts' is an official parts distributor. They show a part #49 for the P3 Pro/Adv. for about $45.....which is about right. They list it as OEM also, and that's what you need. If in doubt, contact them for part clarification.

Compass calibration is independent of gimbal operations, so I think it's just being a typical DJI drone. Mine have that issue sometimes. Just keep trying, keeping away from possible magnetic interference areas.

If you haven't already, check out msingers' site 'Phantomhelp.com' for everything Phantom. Just be sure to select the correct drone model from the drop-down list to search for manuals, how-to's, and parts available. ( msinger is a regular member on this site, and is an approved vendor.)

Firmware or Compass?
It is not the fix.

My best bud ended up like being a service writer for at a lot of dealerships.
I thought this is funny.

The mechanics would do all the bulletins, etc They come to him and say cannot figure this out.
He replies you guys are going to throw parts at it then? I laughed so hard. :) I said, so if they stick to the car, then its fixed? .

He says yes.:)

Part of my twisted, I love funny stuff. 👍👌
