P3 Storage

I usually just have my p3 sitting on my desk or on a shelf-- do I need to have the gimbal protector on at all times or is it OK to just have the camera hanging there?

You only need it on in scenarios where your camera can bounce around while your Phantom is turned off.

Does anyone ever plan on having the camera bounce around, such as from accidently dropping it? What harm is there in leaving it on?

No harm in leaving it on...unless you factor in the "cool" factor.

My lock stays on when not flying, and I always store it in the case.... WE HAVE CATS!!

My cat heard it start up one time and that was it. Scared the heck out of her. I leave it on floor in corner as I'm learning it, she steers a clear path around it lol!!
