P3 flight battery will be a 4S 4480mah 15.2v

The P3 is the same size physically. This maximizes profit margin.

I also believe a 4S LiPo is rated at it's nominal voltage which is 14.8v not 15.2v.

Lower capacity (and maybe some slight improvements) reduces cell size allowing them to squeeze in 4 cells.

Yup 4S is 14.8v but oddly enough, I got the voltage from the DJI website.

So... stupid question: Would this mean that the 3S batteries are wholly incompatible, or do you think they'd work, but just with lesser flight time?

Acknowledged.

Seems fishy to change the nominal volt/cell rating method between P2 and P3.

Maybe to 'sound or look' better???

but... now 23 minutes... before (p2v) 25 minutes... I don´t know why use 4S then...

No.

There is no forward or reverse compatability.

The P2 is 3S (11.1V) the P3 is 4S (14.8v).

Yea I know.

I've been using LiPos for about ten years and those numbers are atypical specifications.

Look up any 4S LiPo [nominal] voltage and get back to me.

DJI has decided to spec. it at a different charge level.

This same level would spec. the P2 Batt. an 11.4v, atypical.

Most likely the p3 is heavier and to compensate for the weight/flight-time ratio, a whole new power system is used, one that requires more amps, discharge rating hence 4 cell instead of 3.

It's about the same weight ...
Weight (including battery and propellers)
1280 g
It just has a lot going on, powering lightbridge etc and needs more juice.
that's a dollar a gram! (almost)

Hmm, one question would be, what would the nominal voltage be on the new LiPo chemistry that has a peak charging voltage of 4.35v/cell instead of 4.2v/cell?

These have been showing up in phones since early 2013 (Oppo Find5 had a 4.35v cell, so does Find7 and Sony Xperia Z3) - these cells might have a 3.8v/cell nominal rating instead of 3.7.

At least some people rate the 4.35v cells with a nominal of 3.8 instead of 3.7 - http://www.highpowertech.com/product_096ffc299200f517.html

That might be another reason DJI broke compatibility, if they switched to a new chemistry, they would have had to stick with incompatibility even at 3S.
