Gimbal works great, but now I can't get the thing to leave the ground. I have reset the gain multiple times to no effect.

It's always a thrill a minute with DJI.

Try pushing the other stick upwards. If that works, you somehow switched the controller's mode.

Agreed, check to make sure RC is in mode 2 in RC Assistant, and check in Phantom Assistant under basic-rc tab to make sure they are all in "NORM" and not "REV".
