very new to the DJI copters and have been pretty impressed with everything I have read/seen so far. Can someone clarify for me if the P2 can be programmed with a series of waypoints in advance and just let loose to fly its designated route without any need for pilot control (or to be within range of the pilot)?

If additional components are required to make this possible, what are they and what is a ballpark cost?

If this is possible, what are the limitations in terms of route complexity, number of waypoints, distance etc...

Thanks!

you need a $1300 part to do what is called BVR. Beyond visual range flight and waypoints. it's not available yet. Light bridge. Look at forums section for the light bridge to learn more

@slug420 What you're talking about is known as the iPad Groundstation, and it's not yet compatible with the Phantom 2, but it should be soon. Once that happens, the hardware is about $200 to add on, which includes the unit to mount on the Phantom as well as the ground unit and Bluetooth module it requires.

The Lightbridge d4ddyo mentions will supposedly extend the control range of the Phantom (or any UAV it's installed on) a good deal, but it won't do the pre-programmed waypoints flight like you're asking about, and pre-orders are now being taken for $1600.
