Hey,

I might be taking a trip to Antarctica and was wondering if any one has had experience flying here and could give me some tips.

I have heard of some eratic and random behavior from earlier model Phantoms.

Is it too cold?
does the gps work?
do i have to fly in non gps mode?

I am using a phantom 3 professional.

GPS is from satellites orbiting the earth and they do work in the Antarctica. Big issue is to keep battery warm right up to time of flying and to be a good judge of wind in that area. 30 mph winds don't work well with a 23 mph quad goes with wind really fast but can't get it back. Good luck and be warm.

The magnetometer will be the weak link.

They don't work well at the poles.

According to the DJI Phantom 3 Pro manual online. "The Phantom 3 Professional cannot operate within the polar region". It is on page 40.

If you're going on a sea trip you should be fine, as your not going to be within 1,000km of the south pole where some magnetic problems may occur.

Here's a video of a Phantom 2 flying off the Antarctic coast.
