hello forum I am new to the drone world and after looking through many threads I am wonder is it best to not update my software and firmware for my newly purchased phantom 4 advanced? It seems to be causing some people trouble and being new I don't need trouble from the start, I not sure what's loaded on it now but my guess is it's older firmware, thanks for any help

You can find the currently installed firmware version in the "General Settings" --> "About" section of DJI GO. Check out the release notes to find a list of major changes made since that release.

Firmware updates are optional, so it's up to you. Some people are going to reply here and tell you not to update it (and that firmware updates are pure evil). And other people (like me) are going to tell you they like running the latest firmware (to take advantage of the latest features/fixes).

Yep! DJI lovers who have not had to react with their customer service bunch will love the firmware but others who have had to contact DJI and who have gotten hurt by the restrictions of same firmware will tell you definitely NO! I got smart in November when DJI GO started crashing every few minutes and switched to Litchi. I've never been alerted that I had to upgrade to keep flying using Litchi and I consider Litchi a superior platform with better features (waypoints missions and mission hub) than DJI GO!

My suggestion is to fly what works now and once the problems start immediately switch to Litchi.
Good luck and welcome to drones.

I'm from the camp that quietly flies around using the GO4 app with the latest FW and app updates with no issues. Sure there have been a couple of moments where I botched an upgrade and come to this forum for advice, but the package has been more than reliable. Litchi is not immune from glitches that were present a couple of updates ago, now resolved, and I use that as an 'accessory' when I want to fly a mission for instance.
Most of the issues presented on this forum are roughly divided into either, operators not understanding how to use their DJI product, using device platforms that are not up to the task or not reading/understanding the manual.
In your case, fly with what you have loaded and get comfortable with it before updating so that you have an understanding of how your P4A behaves to use as a reference point.

Thanks for reply gentlemen, I have the problem that the aircraft will not activate so trying to figure out what it is I maybe doing wrong

Need more information
Have you downloaded the DJI GO4 app and set up your email/password?
Do you have green lights on both the controller and the quad meaning that they are linked?
Which device are you using and what do you see on the app screen when connected to the controller?

Yea just got done doing my first shake down flight and all seem well, a little nerve wrecking as I hate first flights as you never know what may go wrong.
