  • Didn't want to post on the other post. In Rome I got rob at a train station with camera's all around. Police wouldn't do a thing. Everybody there says the police there are worthless.

Well that's rubbish. Over here it's the first thing they do and we can now use dash cameras as evidence in court. Sorry to hear that you got nowhere but maybe it's just an Italian thing. I travelled there as a kid and didn't like the rubbish laying around and the millions of people that didn't seem to care about anything but themselves.
Hey Tevek my trip to the bush was great and made clear that goggles, boosted antenna and battery extenders would all be advantageous. And in that order as it would be fine with just the goggles.

I went with the boosted antenna set up due to the forest and that helped with the goggles. Managed to fly it straight through the trees to over 1 Klm yesterday with only occasional video drop outs but full control signal, I'm happy with that. Not brave enough for the batty mods yet as I will do something really stupid, although the P4P batteries have a greater capacity giving a couple of extra mins without any mods.
As well as some kind of lens filter as the best light was just on twilight when the whole surface was in shadow and colors were all evenly exposed and easier to differentiate. Distance wasn't as good as hoped as the signal began to drop out at only 3kms.

I use the polar pro series which are ND4, ND8 and a CPL. Essential for videos, not so much for still photos. They work a treat and make post editing a lot simpler in Adobe Premier. Were you losing your video signal at 3kms or control signal. Height is your friend if the bars start to drop. I'm not shy about taking it a long way up to clear the forest.
Got some odd warnings like a) "battery temp below 15 degrees - do not fly" early a.m.) and b) with battery level still at 50% it told me "battery level too low" to activate Home Lock. I like home and course lock to enable me to use the left stick to 'browse' around while taking the most direct route home.

Haven't had the too cold warning as I usually fly in the afternoon. The low battery RTH warning may have occurred if you were at a distance where the smart electronics in the battery think it may not make it back. It's very consevative. I use home lock quite a bit if I can't be bored with the radar display and always turn OA off due to it robbing the drone of optimum speed (50 kph).
But the biggest head trip was just how loud it is in that environment. ie I could hear the dang thing even when it was 500m up and 1.5 kms away! Nothing stealthy about it, that's for sure. There are no tall trees to dampen it's audio impact - only mulgas.
Light breeze today and off to Herdsman Lake again later.
Hope your week enabled you to get out and about some - ... have you ever been caught out flying in drizzle or rain or even just a heavy fog/mist?
    Cheers

Yeah, had a flight yesterday in light drizzle trying to get back after a trip. No big deal and just wiped everything down and sat it in the lounge room with the fire ticking over.
Are you contactable by phone, tevek? or do you prefer to keep your anonymity? No worries either way

Wow! 1km thru trees is amazing as it only takes casurina thicket at less than a 100m to stop video on mine. How far would you now get in a treeless clear environment? Do you think 6kms as suggested in this youtube vid is realistic or total bs? Says his p4p is not modified and is in a low wifi/ph rural area.

Should be even better in our remote outback, you think?

Yeah the first time I tried it, I pushed until the video starting dropping out and that was just over 1 Klm. Full control signal so who knows. Flew last week and steamed out to 4.5 Klm and still had full signal and only returned due to the wind picking up. 6 Klm is definitely doable depending on the wind and the battery.
Sth of Manji - as far as Shannon? I grew up in Burekup/Bunbury area. What booster did you get for your FPVLR? I'm looking at possibly antenna + battery boost like online and know a guy up here who can probably do it. He invented a light weight battery for metal detectors which is still used today. A very smart cookie

A little place called Quinninup, I live on the lake and launch from there. I got the FPVLR boosted kit from Drones2 up in Myaree. Cost around $500 for the supply and instal which is expensive but I got sick of lost signal RTH. I was after better penetration through the forest and I can fly about 1 Klm straight through the trees which was impossible with the standard set up. Open field distance is not an issue.

I bought a p4p days after that post and have been clocking up the hours and kms around Perth. Haven't managed to send it further than 2300m before RTH kicks in but I'm hoping that improves out in the bush in a zero phone interference environment. Where are you located where you have so much unrestricted airspace around ?
    Cheers

I live just south of Manjimup and live amongst 100,000 hectacres of mostly bush. We have an occasional light plane come by but you can hear it long before it is near you. I recently boosted my set up and the battery is now the limit. If you are near a beach, try early in the morning before the crowds and you will smash your 2300 mtrs. Thanks for the birthday wishes.
Oh Shoot - being new and not used to this site, I've only just noticed that you actually replied to my question in March. Thanks and also a happy Birthday for today, I notice.

Hi Tevek - I'm in Perth - yet to buy a drone and wondering what you have and how long you've had it and what you do with it, please?

I have P4 with unboosted FPVLR antenna setup, ive had this one for about 10 months following a previous PS3. Fly as a hobbyist and probably the only drone soul for 50 klms! I have access to unlimited flying areas and use it
