After carefully studying the firmware upgrading process, I went ahead and got started.
I completely formatted my SD card, copied the .bin file and inserted into my Phantom 3 Pro.
NOTE: I broke my gimbal so the camera is disconnected from the SD card module/processor.
After powering on the Phantom, it takes about 1 min for the yellow status lights to start flashing, indicating that the installation process has started. There is no sound because the camera assembly is not attached.
I set my timer to 40 min to be safe, turn off the drone, insert the SD card in my PC hoping to find the TXT file, but it's not there!
I repeated this process 3 times, formatting the card each time.
Does the Phantom require the camera to be connected in order to complete the upgrade??
