FAA registration question

Also wondering what the benefits of doing the FAA thing????

It's not a benefit but a requirement. Every model/operator (depending on the type of registration) has to be registered before the aircraft is flown.

If hobby registration the person is "registered" and that FAA number is applied to any/all aircraft they fly for hobby/recreation.

If commercial then the specific aircraft (serial #) is registered with a specific FAA# and it's applied only to that one aircraft. Same portal for both registrations and same cost ($5).

I have a question that a friend asked me and I didn't have the answer to it. Do RC helicopters have to be registered with the FAA? If they do not have to be whats the reason? How do they differ from a drone?
Don't fry me I'm new and thought this was a valid question.

Is it .55 lbs to 5.5 lbs and capable of sustained flight?

You could also type "do I have to register my drone?" into google search and watch the magic...
