Nice idea, but much of the cost of a Quad is in the electronics, battery, motors etc so I dont see how this would be much of a saving. The only interesting thing I see with this is the ability to make different designs of Quads.
Take a look at - QuadLugs - not only can you build a multi-rotor to your requirements - fly - then rebuild into another, but you can also adjust the motor arm angles in 15 degree increments to control the flying characteristics. The body size - motor arm length - landing gear length - motor arm angles - can all be designed by you to your requirements. I have just finish building a QuadLugs quad with a 10" x 8" body and it flew fantastic. Very durable and they fly very - very - stable. www.quadlugs.com
