Just bought a phantom 3 professional and did the firmware update. Haven't put the props on and I am just giving it a once over in my office. I had no problem arming the motors manually. When I tried the auto fly it revs up then shuts down. Is that a safety feature to protect the motors when there are no props.

Congrats with the purchase. You'll love flying.
I never tried that, but checked it for you.
My P3A spins the motors and then after a about 5 sec the motors shut down. The power is stil on and I can turn on the motors manually.
Does your drone show the same behavior?
I would not recommend flying indoors the first time, but try the simulator.
As soon as you can go outdoors and enjoy the nice toy!

I believe this is a safety feature. No different than pulling straight down on the throttle an killing the motors which I think is 3 seconds without change in elevation
