App connection requirement or limited flight?

I've read a bit about the requirement to be logged in or connected to the app or have flight limits imposed but what does it actually mean real world? Is it an issue? I'm still on an earlier go app version and haven't upgraded since last year but want to understand implications or not. Any pointers welcome! Thanks
