Antenna type and distance achieved

got a tp link 8dbi omni coming tuesday

i will get that one from the site u linked me when i get paid next

the antenna i have is a no name brand so could that be the issue?

All this depends on how far you want to fly and how much your looking to spend
I get 1500 ft with the 5 tp link and 1800 or so with the 8

just ordered a tp link 5dbi omni and the ufl pigtail thingamajig. hopefully, this will give me a bit more distance with my camera connection.

checked everything
the antenna lead in the extender is fixed in securely
put the antenna in vertical position
fully charged the extender
still only getting 1300ft fpv range

Are both antennas (5.8 GHz, from the controller and 2.4 GHz, from the Wi-Fi extender) close, like less than 10 cm between them? Could that affect the range of both?

No amplifying and still working with the stock Wi-Fi repeater, so far.

Tests to be performed:
1-a) + 2-a) + 3-a)
1-a) + 2-b) + 3-a)
1-a) + 2-c) + 3-a)
1-a) + 2-d) + 3-a)
1-b) + 2-a) + 3-a)
1-b) + 2-b) + 3-a)
1-b) + 2-c) + 3-a)
1-b) + 2-d) + 3-a)
This is a lot of testing to be performed, already...

I will let you all know, as soon as I start getting some results.

So far, in a fully cleared area, I reached more than 1,000 m distance, control wise (never lost signal, the RTH was never triggered) and the Wi-Fi signal reached more than 600 m, with my stock P2V. This was done one month ago, before any modification...
I have the video, but didn't post it on Youtube, yet. As soon as I will, I will post its link here, also.

Took longer than expected, but finally got some good weather, here and made several tests, which you can find in the flytrex site (http://www.flytrex.com/joao.d.paiva/).

The results were all a bit frustrating, to be honest, since I didn't get the results I was hoping for.
The range tests were all made in an area with no Wi-Fi interference at all and no buildings whatsoever, so, ideal to test for maximum range.

My Wi-Fi repeater cannot be working properly... my app goes black several times and I'm not able to put it back to working normally, no matter what I try. I'm charging the range extender all the time, with an external battery, but the picture still goes black. Sometimes, it keeps receiving data (range, height, etc), others, it completely stops.

As for the distances achieved, I am still trying different setups in the controller and in the Wi-Fi transmitter (the P2V is still stock), although I have to say I am not at all happy with the results I got from the modified setups, as I was able to perform better with my completely stock P2V in Jeddah, KSA, where I was able to reach more than 600m (2,000 ft) with Wi-Fi working 100% and more than 1,000 m (3,300 ft) with control in the Vision. At that time, I decided to back out before the return to home was triggered.

This time, I left the return home to be triggered every time, just to see how far I could actually go, so I will go back to the stock antenna. On the controller, I used a 9dBi Omni antenna, a panel 11dBi antenna and a clover leaf antenna, all of them with very similar results (from 700 m to 800 m, ie, 2,300 to 2,650 ft).
As for the Wi-Fi repeater, I tried using a 6dBi Omni antenna, a panel 8dBi antenna and a 15dBi Omni, also, but I was always loosing signal after 200-300m (700-1,000 ft), which is very poor. I kept one of the inside panels of the stock repeater working, but it didn't work out.

Waiting for my new Wi-Fi antennas, pinwheel for the P2V and a parasitic for the Wi-Fi repeater.

In the meantime, I will try the normal 2dBi 5.8 GHz antenna on the controller (similar to the stock one) and will go back to the two 2.4 GHz stock panel antennas on the Wi-Fi repeater, to see if I get the same range I was getting in KSA...

Luckily, with the flytrex core, I get all the accurate data I need.

The DJI Vision app has been letting me down too often...

How can one do proper FPV like that????

ClimbrJohn started a great online spreadsheet here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... ring#gid=0 for us all to use if you would like to add some test results there. Up to you of course. You have already done much hard work.

is it the app or your device? Screen goes black?

What type device are you using.
Also, can you post pictures of your antenna setup?

All antennas aren't created equal.
Some are junk!

I've tested quite a few different cheap omni 'rubber duck' antennas an some flat panels.
So far my best results were from an ineXpensive Asus flat 7di panel and an Asus 5dbi high gain linear antenna. (from Amazon warehouse deals)

2000 feet with no control loss and only lost video while yawing right or left which resumed instant. I have better antennas on the way

Hi cavaleiro,
so what antennas have you tried? Mine should arrive soon I think so you can compare to the ones you had before.
I was wondering if you didn't end up burning one of the final stages on one of the transceivers....if you are not able to revert back and get the same distances I would worry about that, maybe the extender is toast...

Yeah, I don't really know how I will check that, but I will, don't worry! I already reverted back to the stock setup. Now, I just need to test it again.

Maybe the problem is on the pigtail cable itself, it seems to be slightly damaged. I will replace it for another one.

Can the proximity between the 5.8GHz control antenna and the 2.4GHz FPV Wi-Fi antenna be an issue, shortening the range of both systems simultaneously? I mounted them less than 2 inches apart....

when u screw the antenna into the sma connector it only screws in bout 2/3rds of the way is that correct?

im hoping the tp link antenna will give me better results
if not ill convert it back to stock and try that just to make sure the extender is not damaged

then if that works ill try replacing the external antenna cable

thats bout all i can do if non of that works i have no clue what could be wrong

A guy in the other thread had a pigtail wire that was shorted
Maybe double check those

I would cause it's sounds to me like your running off the stock antenna only
Can't hurt as they are cheap try another one

I've been reading through the multiple posts regarding modding the wifi extender, both on this thread and also on many other threads.

Frankly I'm overwhelmed by information. I want to mod my extender and possibly my RX/TX antenna on my RC, but am at a loss for the parts I should order to achieve my goals. I'm pretty skilled in many aspects of mods, technology, etc, and have been reading so much I'm not certain on a clear plan. I'm good at soldering, etc, have a myriad of tools, multimeter, solder, solder remover, etc etc,

I currently achieve a range of 200-300 meters at best, although that distance has been through wooded areas, obstructed signal path, lots of electronic signal noise and damp, humid air. I was hoping to increase my range at least to 500-700 meters reliably through those conditions, or at least 1000 meters in more ideal environment.

I'm leaving on vacation in ten days, would like to get mods installed and tested prior to departure. I live in the Seattle area, was hoping to buy most stuff through amazon, due to speed of shipping, price.

Was thinking about adding a tp-link 9db omni and 8db directional to extender. Also thinking about adding tp-link 9db omni to the RC tx/rx.

Suggestions?

What range will I see with these mods?

Any other ideas?

What other items will I need to order to order for a neat, reliable, professional install?

Will this stuff still allow me to fit controller in my pelican 1510 case without too much trouble?

I'm not against using other antenna manufacturers, but am concerned over time to ship, cost, size. I don't want a huge ornate antenna rig. I understand that by being modest in size, price that my range improvement will be limited. I'm not looking for a huge increase.

Thanks for your assistance and suggestions!

This video will show you how to do the mod to the extender he also has links to the parts needed
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aEHzDi4hHKU
The to link 9 is a directional or omni and the 8 dbi is an omni
I have gone to 1800 ft with the 8 omni and 1500 ft with the 5 omni
I don't have a 9 directional but have seen ranges from 1800 to 3000 ft

anyone use this antenna with any success?

RP-SMA 5.8G 11db aerial FPV high gain panel antenna for FPV 5.8Ghz TX RX

http://www.amazon.com/RP-SMA-aerial-pan ... 9KAYIQOOLR
I use a similar model eXcept its an Asus branded version on the extender with another Asus linear and have went 3700 feet before I triggered RTH.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005UBNJ48/ref=oh_details_o06_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1.. I like using the brand name antennas for the simple reason they need their products to work at peak.
FPVLR also said the TP_link antennas and other name brand models have good swr readings.

Guys quick question. I am at work and didn't have time to read over this thread to locate the answer to this question.
I have a couple of these cables left over from my repeater mod. Is this the same cable I need for the camera mod?

2 of 2X U.FL Mini PCI to RP-SMA Pigtail Antenna WiFi Cable (copied from my orders on Amazon)

thanks!
