I have an extra android phone that "about phone" states android version 4.1.1 is installed. But the DJI app will not install. States phone not compatible. So what else does a phone need?

"If you get the message shown "Your device is not compatible" while you install the apk from google play,
you can download the apk in mobilephone browser with the url http://m.dji.net/djivision"

No need to up date os on phone. It is already 4.1.1 enough to get the DJI app to work.

No real "brand name" to it.
