Will we get screwed by Trade War?

A 25% tariff on DJI products would be a BUMMER. Period. And furthermore, anyone who thinks that trade wars are a “good thing” or “easy to win” is a pickle short of a full jar.

Trade wars NEVER work --- any student of history will know all about the miserable failures like Smoot-Hawley and Dubya Bush's steel tariffs of the early 2000's. Most historians believe Smoot-Hawley was a big contributor to starting WW2.

Some people claim Trump is some kind of "genius" when it comes to protectionist trade but why couldn't he protect his Atlantic City casinos from going belly up? Or what about Trump Airlines and Trump Vodka and Trump Steaks? ALL bankrupt. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs are bonafide "geniuses" because none of their companies ever went bankrupt.

Also, a question. How do you think that the USA can win a trade war with a country that makes virtually EVERYTHING almost EVERY American uses everyday? Or with every other country in the world at once?

U.S. will NEVER win a trade war against China. Yes, we buy a lot of their products but when push comes to shove, they have PLENTY of other reliable trading partners like the EU and Eastern Asia and South America.

Whether we like it or not --- China has the upper hand in any trade war. Case closed.

Yourself being a moderator, I am surprised by your anti-Trump dribble. I come to this site to get info and dialogue on drones not skewed ideologies!
You can count me anti Trump. His actions may please his base but did a lot of long term damages to usa interests.
When the trade war escalates further and the world goes to recession, this debate would be meaningless because we will be all too poor to buy anything.

Sure hope his trade war isn’t gonna result in a 25% increase for DJI drones. Has anyone heard anything?

Will we get screwed? Of course we will. Whether or not you buy a drone frome China, it won’t mattet - parts are made in China. Drones aside, expect price increases in virtually everything - buying a new house? You will pay $7K more due due tariffs on Canadian lumber. How about new appliances, or tools? You will pay more. Ditto for avocados, fruit, seafood, clothing, automobile parts, or vehicles themselves.

Have investments? Expect to take a hit in 2919 as companies report 1st quarter results. Thank you, Trump!

You forget their internal market can adsorb the lost of usa market. On the other hand, usa can't ignore the China market.

I would pay more for a locally manufactured product. All the clever tech in DJI products is bought in. They (DJI) were in the game early and have huge market share and brand recognition but unless they have exclusive deals with intel/Movidius/realsense, TI etc there is nothing to stop other outfits producing an equally performing product. Doing it cheap is the problem. Nobody can tell me DJI stuff is well made, just look at the injection mouldings. I replaced 5 shells on 3 P3’s and the 4’s are an improvement but it’s not great
I have 2 P3S with more than 800 Airdata logged flights between the two aircraft..I am very happy with the product and they have not broken or cracked or failed...I highly recommend the DJI Phantom 3 Standard 2.7K..there is always a little room for improvement in any product.. Semper Fi

You might have completely missed my point. There is no question the P3 shells in particular had issues and many experienced failures. Forget for a minute if it helps in understanding what I am saying and that is simply I would be happy to pay more for a locally manufactured product with higher quality and better support. The quality is remembered long after the purchase price is forgotten. Supporting the local economy where possible is also worth doing.

Trump's tariffs on imported Chinese electronic components has already taken one American company out of commission --- expect MANY more in the months and years ahead --- but I thought Trump was fighting for good American factory jobs at home? Sure don't seem like it !!

100% facts --- Chinese middle class consumers will soon surpass 850 million by 2030 --- THREE times the entire population of the U.S.

Chinese economy don't need to buy a dang thing from us --- they will do quite nicely on their own.

The killer fact about the Chinese middle class

Look at the big picture, not if you will have to pay more for your quad.
That is how DJI got ahead, by being able to under cut everyone elses prices. Now maybe an American company can compete instead of going under. More jobs here. More competition. Better service. End of the drone monopoly.

I clicked "like" on this post, only because "love" was not available.

Getting all lathered up because "I might have to pay 25% more" is the kind of shortsightedness that has allowed other countries to rob us blind for decades. Our previous "leaders" have avoided the dreaded "trade war" by turning over the keys to the vault, just hoping to win votes, and get re-elected.

The problem is you are just typing things. Nothing supports what you are saying. That’s why when you reply you will provide nothing to backup your comment. Bankrupting American companies is clearly not the way to improve our economy. And not surprisingly, before tariffs our GDP had been rising tremendously. This last quarters GDP growth is only the 5th largest compared to our prior “leaders” economy. So when you say “handing over the keys to the kingdom”, I have no idea what you are talking about.

That the Chinese are stealing US secrets is more the responsibility of American companies lack of cyber security. Cyber intrusions (and cyber terrorism) are a fact of life. It's also companies' responsibility who farm out manufacturing in China to make sure the workers are treated fairly in wages and working conditions. Tariffs usually only accomplish hurting companies and consumers. To wit: the $12 billion bailout of American farmers who have been hurt by the tariffs.

We have been in a trade war for over fifteen years. China has stringent blocks to doing business with them. You must give them trade secrets, patents, must make product in China and hire according to their policies on foreign trade. We are just now starting to get back. It will hurt, but not as much as we have already been hurt. We are doing what should have been done a generation ago.

There is nothing to support what you are saying regarding America being hurt by Trade with any country. You are merely repeating Fox News sound bites. Please provide statistical sources reflecting the damage that has been done to America regarding trade with China.

Once again I guess need to point out that American corporations knew all the Chinese laws BEFORE they moved to China for the sweet sweet slave labor and chose to give the Chinese everything in hopes that with such low labor cost, and no environmental laws that they would get even richer then they could imagine and now that it has come back to bite them, they whine and complain that it is unfair. Well that’s the price you pay for screwing your own country. They can always come back to the USA, but they won’t, instead they will try to convince stupid people that we should bail them out with a trade war that will kill all the companies that didn’t leave the USA, and our farmers, and all the rest of us.

Wow! I believe the answer to your question, which seems to have been lost in all the other posts, every one of which I read first, before replying, is that a 25% price increase for DJI drones is a highly likely result of U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports, like them or not! Buy your DJI drones now, or risk paying a roughly 25% tariff increase later!

On the bright side, any such tariffs on new DJI drones should help with the resale market of our existing used craft, though! Might even enable us to break even upon resale, instead of taking a major bath, as resale prices otherwise keep going down!

"Smoke 'em, if you got 'em!"

$12 billion bailout to farmers to compensate for high tariffs --- sure sounds like another "genius" idea from Soviet Trump.

I thought Republicans always believed in free trade and govt. staying out of the way of capitalism?
