Where to Fly Palm Desert, La Quinta area?

Hi...I'm going to be in the Palm Desert area for 2 weeks in March on vacation. I'm looking for a couple of safe areas to fly, test AutoPilot, basically have some fun without bothering anybody. Can someone recommend a spot or two? a local park, open area etc.

I've been planning some day trips to shoot some scenic locations around the area but I'm also really interested is a place I can take my family to fly safely
