Ok, I bumped timelapse up to every 10 secs and the flicker is now every 10 secs. It's happening as the GoPro is taking the picture each time. Is that common?

Yes, that's normal. The screen will go black when the GoPro takes a picture. I was concerned the first time my screen blinked every 2 or 5 seconds until I realized it coincided with the GoPro taking the picture. If you switch to video mode on the GoPro, you won't see the screen go black at all.
Ok, just a very silly question.... Did you check your connections ? Power , video feed.... ? It would seem like a bad connection to me. I had a similar issue. What I did was strip all my connections and check. After that problem sorted
