What computer is everyone using to edit 4K video?

LOL I am with you I dont get apple lovers. For less than half the cost you can get a more powerful non proprietary system. Want to upgrade? No problem. I just upgraded mine from a 2600K to a 5820K 6 core. Motherboard, cpu and ram cost me $600 to upgrade to something that runs circles around anything apple has to offer.

Yeah but you're still running Windows. We all know how incredibly unstable and scary windows is.

I bought a P3A mainly because I didn't have a computer or a TV that is capable of handling 4K (and for the extra cost of the Pro I got a second battery, case, ipad etc, etc).
3 weeks after getting my Phantom I went out and on the spur of the moment bought a new iMac 27" with the 5K Retina display, would've been perfect for what I need.
I don't plan on doing any serious editing, just trimming down to what I want to keep.

Still happy with my decision though. Now just gotta convince SWMBO to let me upgrade the TV to a smart 4K one......

I wish I'd gone the p3a route now - Costco have a TCL 65" LED 3D 4K Smart TV at $1599.00. Looks nice

Not to fan the Windows / Mac debate, but as a former hard-core Windows user, I'll only ever edit video on the Mac, 4K, 2K, no K. But, to keep it even, I use a vintage 1989 "clickity clackety" IBM PC keyboard.

And after 1 year, a PC value is very low. After 4 years, I sell a MBP 15 (SSD, 8GB RAM) for 1200$.
Some models are overpriced for what they offer (typical Apple arrogance) but in most cases, when you sell a Mac after several years, you get back the extra cost compared to a PC.

Maybe it'll get me intro trouble for saying this but maybe that says a lot about people willing to not only pay for new over priced stuff but old over priced stuff. You definitely get great resale value.

Haha thanks im afraid this is the only one in this configuration, the hardest part was figuring everything out and which WC fittings I needed, actually building it just took time and a dremel more than anything else, alot of dremeling! Im not sure what details i could give that would help you out as alot of the work i did was just on the fly and not planned out - Adam

I had posted on one of the previous pages that I as well have built a Hackintosh. Hopefully some folks will take up that banner and attempt the same project. The only difference in our systems other than water cooling. I use dual AMD Radeon 7950 video cards. For some reason, they tend to perform better with FCPX than Nvidia. It's very difficult to give a generic good configuration, but about pc the suggestion is last generation i7 cpu and 16gb ram, of course a good nvidia graphic card gtx 7xx or 9xx series. Really suggested is ssd disk for os and video cache. Don't forget a good ips monitor, minimum hd resolution.
Personally I use i7-4790k and gtx760, ssd Samsung, 32gb with premiere pro. My motherboard is asus sabertooth mark I, water cooled.

Hi - I've asked around on a couple of amazon threads & they have all mentioned the Nvidia GTX 970 for 4k video editing -approx $500 Aus ! might have to bite - I'm on a 3yr + old quad core running vista 4gb ram. Is it worth the video card upgrade with what I'm running..

Nice! Yeah I own a lot of other Apple hardware and computers. I was holding out for the new Mac Pro and when I saw the final specs and price I said "HELLLL no"! I love Apple's hardware designs and customer service but I didn't like the direction the new Mac Pro was going it. I used to build my own computers all the time when I was in my teens and early 20s. It was fun to educate myself again on the latest hardware after a brief hiatus.
The water cooling really helps keep my home office cooler. CPU temp never goes over 35c GPU tops out at 43c when gaming. At idle and typical surfing and youtubing, they are both around 28-30c.

Oh yeah and no screaming fans! Much quieter

Asking for opinions about Editing Software is like asking about religion.

The decision of which program to use depends on too many variables to be selected from other people's experiences. You edit with your brain - the NLE is just a tool.

I am absolutely certain that you will find few unbiased responses to the question: "Which editor should I learn and use"? You are discovering the "Baby Duck Syndrome" which denotes the tendency for editors to "imprint" on the first system they learn, then judge other systems by their similarity to that first system. The result is that users generally prefer systems similar to those they learned on and dislike unfamiliar systems.

My advice is simple. Most of the modern NLE programs offer free trials:

There's dozens of others. All have some strengths and all have some limitations. It costs nothing but time to try all of them with a test project and select the one that best fits your needs.

Finally: Use what works for you and will make your clients happy. Try them out. All the NLE programs are great... and they all suck! They are just tools and in today's world they all will get the job done. But as tools go, some are better than others for certain jobs. The right answer for me could be the wrong one for you.

the best answer yet SteveMann! I might just add here, Divinci Resolve? It's been an up and coming NLE for some time now and it's free. Add to that the capabilities of color grading and it's hard to beat. The latest update has just come out and claiming to be right up there with the best of them. Also, if you throw in Fusion, also free, I think (imo only) you have a very good comparison to Adobe's Premier Pro + After Affects package. But it's FREE!
