Yes, I have a 15-inch retina MBP which is OK for viewing the raw footage but is slow to compile high resolution vids.

I was thinking about a similar setup but I think I will wait until the new iMac Pro comes out in Dec.

Build a hackintosh. You will get same or better quality for 1/3rd the price

I built a new one a couple of months ago. Trying with the red team this time after years with the blue.

AMD Ryzen 1600 @ 3.8ghz 16gb Corsair DDR4-3000 GTX1060 Muskin 500gb SSD A few 1TB spinners.

While gaming (the very little I do), the improvements are marginal but when video encoding, it beats the crap out of my old I5-2500K @ 4.4ghz. Also my astrophotography imaging software has seen some nice improvements.
