Video: Fitted my Phantom v1 into a Phantom 2 shell (easy!)

Re: Video: Fitted my Phantom v1 into a Phantom 2 shell (easy

Today I got one of my Shapeways goodies in the mail. It was the NAZA v2 LED mount for the side landing gear leg. Fits nicely under the Phantom 1.5 conversion shell...

I am using an alternate Phantom aftermarket landing gear because my Original Phantom is still all put together...

The Shapeways v2 LED holder unit is pretty light... very 'non-existent' in your hand, and dare I say, cheap looking. However, it does do the trick and once mounted it is firmly into place...

Here are some pics:

I mounted it to my Phantom 1 so you can see how it looks on the original Phantom landing gear (although I maybe should have mounted it on the rear of the Phantom).

My next 'toy' from Shapeways is the NAZA v2 LED mounted on the P2 Battery Door...If I knew it would have looked this good mounted on the side of the landing gear, I would have bought a plain door and just leave it be there for good.

Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase...

"Boat batt" is on the way now: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... duct=33222

I'm still anxious to hear gen3benz's results/impressions from the 5400 ThunderPower and may go with that in the long run, but I do still want to test this oddball nano-tech that Dewey found. The one advantage it might have for me over the 5400 is leaving just a wee bit more space in my beautiful new shuttlebay. Uh, battery compartment. But since I probably won't be using the IPC anyway, I should have adequate room for photon torpedoes. I mean...wiring.

Also, for anybody in this thread who may have missed it, here's some pics n stuff on those custom battery doors Dewey whipped up for us: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=9048

Rather than keep that thread and this thread going too, I'll continue my feedback on the doors in here. This is what the NAZA LED looks like up close, the tolerances here are excellent too:

When inserting my LED unit in to the mount, I had to first pre-bend the retaining clip on the left a little bit, otherwise I would have had to shave just a tiny bit off the lip to get the LED unit under it. Just a smidge of back-n-forth motion for a few seconds was enough, and then the unit just clicked right in and is plenty snug and secure.

Right in the middle of the photo shoot, this guy stormed out on stage and demanded his 15 min:

@PJA: I pulled out the spare canbus cable I was talking about, and after lining everything up it looks like I'll just need to solder it to the end of the current cable rather than straight on to the bare LED board. Otherwise it won't be quite as long as the regular LED module cable, and it looks like that full length may be necessary to get it routed all the way up to the NAZA. Or not...I'll test that shortly before deciding how to proceed. You can see what I mean here:

****, that thing is 150mm long. I like the 278g weight though.
Should get my charger next week and should have my P2 assembled by then. Think im gonna take it easy on this Lipo for a few cycles so it lasts a while.

I am going to ditch the big cables from the LED and iOSD and just use some small 4 wire ribbons.

Sounds like a smart idea. Maybe too smart for me. So will you connect both the iOSD mini and the LED straight to the board? Or will the LED lead still get a plug at the other end to connect to the NAZA port?

Ahhh more creations arriving and being fitted. Looking good PJA.... given I never had a prototype I am really pleased to see it all fitted as it should do. Kinda weird to visualise something and have it turn out so close to what I had in mind without actually holding it. Don't get me wrong I had faith in my own dimensions but its always nice to see it working out

I do side with you on the slight 'cheap' feel to the Shapeways parts. They have a 'detailed' version to the white nylon as an option but I tend not to put it as an option as it is even more expensive for people to buy than the white nylon and it is a little more brittle.

PJA do you mind me using your pics too? Would be great to get a non-render on the Shapeways site.

Good man! I will be most interested to see how that works out. I'd of bought one myself by now but for the fact I've been so busy with work projects and 3D work in the evening.

Well worth the effort of getting shot of those heavy CAN-BUS cables if you can. Its not just the weight that you'll find annoying, Its the manouverability of the wires around the shell.

I sent these to Shapeways earlier (per their request)

I would think that about a third of the cable can be trimmed and still be functional enough in length to reach the door and/or the side mount (with a little extra to spare)...

I ordered another v2 LED to experiment on, myself... I have a few ideas in my head, but until I get all the parts for the P 1.5 conversion, I'm not ready to make mistakes if I really don't have to...

One of the ideas I had was to splice the cable 2/3 from the LED Unit and slip the cable through one of the landing gear holes closest to the v2 LED mount and/or battery door. Then re-splice the cable somewhat shorter under the shell and plug it into the board. As long as there is some slack outside the shell, you can slip the v2 LED cable in and out of the landing gear hole... This way it can reach the v2 mount (like the one I posted above) or the P2 - v2 LED Battery Door...

Yeah just saw the email saying a comment was left on the shop - cheers MC (and to those others that have done the same).

Thanks PJA.... suffice to say your pics will appear on Shapeways soon (though I will admit I will be getting a print of that leg mount soon myself so might take some more). Ironic that actually really need that mount to fly right now and others have it before even me!!

All good though! Sadly not looking like I'll fly anytime this weekend. Just sat here working on a crazy Phantom based idea.... just need to find a machine shop that can mill a few ally bits!

We haven't even finished your last project and you're already creating the next. Knowing what you did to your 450, this could be just about anything. Maybe a battering ram?

Re: Video: Fitted my Phantom v1 into a Phantom 2 shell (easy

Battering ram hey... I like where you are going with this! Nope it is still Phantom based.... too early to say if it can work yet but will be a first thats for **** sure

Gonna connect the iOSD straight to the board but the LED will have connectors so I can remove all components without splitting the shell.

I will use the 4pin plug at the NAZA, I trimmed one off the original phantom LED. Then soldered on 2 male and 2 female arduino terminals. Gonna heatshrink 2 of them together like master Dewey does, so they can both fit through the landing gear leg. Opposite genders on the plugs so I won't mess up plugging them in. Think I'm gonna go with the leg mounted LED holder and plain door....so many options ! :)

No kidding, those cables are massive. Don't mind the scale pics.....I've gone "full Guano"...
I've been weighing everything....even weighed my cheeseburger before I ate it. :D

Re: Video: Fitted my Phantom v1 into a Phantom 2 shell (easy

Nice lightweight way of doing it the gen3benz - i've found those single crimp connectors really handy over this project. Well worth getting stocked up on them imo.

Just ordered a rainbow bag of 50 last night (pre-crimped on the cables) :D

ElGuano or Gizmo posted a link a while back for a great crimping tool I wanted, now I can't find it. Just realized I never ordered it at the time

Re: Video: Fitted my Phantom v1 into a Phantom 2 shell (easy

I have a cheap crimp tool for them. It is 'ok' but a good one is a long term investment and something i will be getting myself. They can be bloody frustrating things those crimps! I swear i drop 3 on the floor for every one i do!

Here's the one I have. It's expensive, but after crimping about dozen terminals without it and 100 with it, I would pay three times the price to keep it! The self-locking and ratcheting feature makes crimping so much faster/easier because it holds onto the terminal for you while you insert and position the wire.

These leads came with 22 gauge wire and they really dwarf the tiny wires attached to the P1 LED. So it seemed like a bit overkill.
My stripper only goes down to 22 gauge so I used to soldering iron to melt a bit of insulation off. Not used to this tiny wiring at my shop. :)
Was looking at micro JST connectors, but they are a bit more expensive.

Re: Video: Fitted my Phantom v1 into a Phantom 2 shell (easy

If your stripper is a bit too big for your wire gauge, (by 2-3awg) you can still strip them if you angle the wires diagonally. I use a 28 or 30awg stripper on my 32awg wiring.

Re: Video: Fitted my Phantom v1 into a Phantom 2 shell (easy

 i will hold my hand up and say i often just use scissors... carefully of course  why can it never be christmas when i need new tools like decent ratchet crimpers!
