UK - Drone owners will be forced to register devices on tracking database

Making a "drone tracking network" would cost millions and would be next to useless given that people can just construct their own and omit any kind of tracker.

It may be possible that it will be enforced at the manufacturer level - in a similar way to how airsoft guns are sold in the UK (must be painted special colors), drones sold in the UK might require some extra addition. If such a network were to exist, they would implement them around airports and busy areas. This will at least allow them to log clueless pilots who who near airports. However, what might be more effective is an enforced method of geofencing, like the P3 already has.

I think this is the most likely route. It would not surprise me to find that there is already a 'poison pill' in our software which could be activated at some future time if we fail to regularly download geofencing updates. Drones are going to become larger and more sophisticated as time goes by, and because we share the airways with manned aircraft the FAA will need to find a way to keep everyone safe.
As usual those who act irresponsibly will spoil the freedom with which those who follow the rules can enjoy their hobby. BTW, it isn't just quadcopters and the like, there are many motorized gliders and ultra long distance unmanned fixed wing aircraft currently in use and being developed. The FAA will certainly have to address their presence in the skies, and I'd expect that to be sooner rather than later.

Thinking about this database, the thing is, if someone wants to cause harm to aviation then they will not register any new drone. It will be just like gun control, the innocent and law abiding individuals will register, criminals will get them on the black market anyway.

Why do so many have a hard time understanding this concept??
That is exactly the why we fight so hard in the US to keep firearms to NOT BE REGISTERED. Only bad things happen after that

make a law , make a law, its a mantra with some!

Guns sold at retail in the U.S. are already registered. When the buyer submits to a "background check" the ballistics fingerprint and his info are recorded along with the gun's serial number. People seem to have not figured this out.

registration of guns has always lead to confiscation down the road and thats why one should only buy fire arms face to face private sale so they dont end up on a list to be rounded up at a later time.

The Second Amendment to the US Constitution does not end "...the right of the people to keep and bear drones shall not be infringed."
We have no "right" to our drones beyond property rights. If we want to fly in the sky which is owned by all the people of the United States we will have to comply with laws regulating that space. Laws regulating the flying of unmanned aircraft are inevitable. It's a compromise we're going to have to live with because the alternative isn't complete freedom, it's a complete ban.
